Cousins, Neal Named To MAC Hermann Trophy Preseason Watch List
August 01, 2019 | Soccer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Tennessee soccer standouts Katie Cousins and Maya Neal have each been named to the 2019 Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy preseason watch list, announced Thursday afternoon by the United Soccer Coaches.
Â
The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year.
Â
Prior to the Women's College Cup, the Missouri Athletic Club will narrow the watch list down to 15 semifinalists on Dec. 3 before naming three finalists on Dec. 13. The winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 10, 2020 at a press conference and awards banquet hosted by the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
Â
Cousins enters her redshirt-senior season as a two-time All-American and back-to-back First Team All-SEC selection for the Volunteers. The holding midfielder played and started in 21 matches in 2018, setting career-highs in goals (3), assists (4) and points (10).
Â
Neal started all 22 matches for the Vols last season at center back, logging a team-high 1,810 minutes as a key piece of Tennessee's record-setting back line. UT forced 12 shutouts and allowed a program-low 15 goals in 2018 on the way to a 16-3-3 record overall. Following the season, Neal was named First Team All-SEC and First Team All-Region by the United Soccer Coaches.
Â
Cousins and Neal were key contributors to Tennessee's historic NCAA Tournament run, which saw the Vols reach the quarterfinal round for the first time. Both will serve as team captains during the 2019 campaign.
Â
This marks the second consecutive season in which Tennessee has had multiple athletes on the MAC Hermann Trophy preseason watch list, as Cousins and VFL Bunny Shaw were named to the list in 2018.
Â
The Vols begin preseason training Tuesday, Aug. 6 and will host an exhibition match Monday, Aug. 12 against Loyola-Maryland. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Regal Soccer Stadium.
Attendance and parking for all preseason and regular season contests at Regal Soccer Stadium is free of charge.
