KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Coming off consecutive 20 win seasons and a run to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament, Tennessee men's tennis head coach Chris Woodruff announced the 2019-20 schedule on Tuesday.
FALL TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE
The Big Orange open the year in Champaign, Ill., from Sept. 7-15 for the M15 Champaign Futures tournament before returning south to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Bama Four-in-the-Fall, running Sept. 13-15.
The team splits up for the Milwaukee Tennis Classic and the South Carolina Invitational (Sept. 20-22). From Sept. 26-29, the Vols will be in Malibu, Calif., for the Oracle ITA Masters while part of the squad will be in Oklahoma for the M25 Norman Futures (Sept. 28-Oct. 6).
Fall Intercollegiate Tennis Association play begins with the ITA All-Americans, Oct. 5-13. ITA Ohio Valley Regionals will be hosted by Vanderbilt (Oct. 24-27) with the Fall National Championships taking place Nov. 6-10 in Newport Beach, Calif.
Tennessee is scheduled to play in the M25 Naples Futures tournament in Naples, Fla., from Oct. 28-Nov. 3.
The annual Knoxville Challenger, a USTA Pro Circuit event, will run Nov. 4-10.
SPRING DUAL MATCH SCHEDULE
The spring slate features 11 home matches, with the first two coming on Jan. 18 against New Mexico and Austin Peay and concluding on April 12 when Texas A&M comes to Knoxville.
Eight of Tennessee's opponents finished last season in the top 25, while 14 were ranked top 50 at the end of last season. The Vols were tabbed No. 13 by both the ITA and USTA, one of six SEC teams ranked in the top 25 in the final poll.
Tennessee will participate in and host the annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 24-25 as it welcomes Arizona State, Oklahoma State and Columbia. The four teams will compete for a spot at the ITA National Indoor Championship in Madison, Wis. (Feb. 13-16).
The non-conference portion of the schedule features trips to Norman at the beginning of the season to face Abilene Christian and Oklahoma (Jan. 10 & 12) and a date with Duke in Raleigh, N.C., on Feb. 7. Georgia Tech, Wichita State, Georgia State, Mercer and Penn round out the non-conference home matches.
SEC play begins on the road at Georgia on Feb. 28 for the Vols before they return home with matches against defending SEC Champion Mississippi State and Ole Miss on March 6 and 8. The rest of league play sees the Vols host Vanderbilt, Kentucky, LSU and Texas A&M while going on the road to face South Carolina, Florida, Auburn, Alabama and Arkansas.
Following the regular season, Tennessee will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the SEC Tournament. Arkansas will host the event at the Billingsley Tennis Center from Wednesday to Sunday, April 15-19.
For the second year in a row the NCAA Tennis Championships will be played with a super regional format. The opening two rounds will be played on campus sites and the 16 teams that advance will play in a two-team super regional on the campus of the higher seed. The eight super regional winners will then move on to the finals site, hosted by Oklahoma State in Stillwater.
Last season, the Vols advanced to the Round of 16 (super regionals) for the first time since 2014 and return eight players from that team, including All-SEC team members Adam Walton and Scott Jones.
