Tennessee looks to qualify for the 17th NCAA Championships in program history at NCAA Athens Regional
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee men's golf team begins NCAA Regional play Monday in Athens, Ga.
The Vols, who are the six seed in the regional, are in search of their 17th NCAA Championships appearance and will have to finish as one of the top four teams to advance the championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
UT is one of five SEC included in the 13-team regional as Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky and Vanderbilt will also be competing at the University of Georgia Golf Course this week. Tennessee is one of four teams in the field with multiple team championships and one of just two to have three titles this season.
A NCAA Regional win would give the Vols a program-record four team titles in a season and their first regional title in program history. UT has placed second in regional play in both 2005 and 2009.
Tennessee is coming off a quarterfinal run in the SEC Championships, the first time in program history it has qualified for match play. At the Championships, redshirt sophomore Hunter Wolcott tied the lowest 54-hole score in the program's history at the conference championships, shooting 205 (-5) to tie for fourth.
He enters NCAA play as the No. 65 ranked college golfer in the country according to the latest Golfstat rankings. He has four straight top-20 finishes entering Monday's opening round.
Joining him in the top-25 at the SEC Championships were juniors Brayden Garrison and Rhys Nevin who tied for 21st in medal play. In Garrison and Nevin, the Vols return two players with NCAA Regional experience, both played in the lineup in last season's regional.
Redshirt sophomore Tyler Johnson will also make his second NCAA Regional appearance, finishing tied for 16th at the 2018 NCAA Raleigh Regional before transferring to Tennessee this season.
Tomorrow's first round is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. (ET) as Tennessee tees off No. 10. The Vols will be paired with Liberty and Alabama on the opening day of play.
