Vols Land Three on All-SEC Teams
April 25, 2019 | Men's Tennis
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Three Tennessee men's tennis players were named to All-SEC teams, the conference office announced on Thursday.
Senior Timo Stodder along with sophomore Adam Walton were named First Team All-SEC while junior Scott Jones earned Second Team All-SEC honors.
"This is a well deserved honor for all three," assistant coach James McKie said. "They have played top three all year in a very tough schedule and each have outstanding records."
It is Stodder's third First Team honor, having previously been named to the league's top team in 2017 and 2018. For Walton, it is his first postseason honor. Jones' Second Team selection is the second year in a row he has earned on spot on the Second Team.
Stodder has put together a stellar career in his time on Rocky Top, and his senior season has been no different.
The Berlin, Germany native crafted a 14-8 dual match singles record with a 9-3 mark in SEC play. He has played every match at the No. 1 position for UT, picking up eight wins over ranked opponents and enters the NCAA Tournament as the No. 23 player in the nation.
In doubles, he has arguably had the best season of his career, teaming with fellow senior Preston Touliatos. Together, they went 13-6 in dual matches and 8-2 in the SEC. They feature four wins over ranked opponents and achieved the highest ranking of their careers, landing at No. 6 on April 22.
"Timo got off to a slow start in the spring but has now found his game and has started to play very well," McKie said. "We are excited to see what he does in the NCAA Tournament as a team and for individuals."
Playing at the No. 2 spot for the majority of the season, Walton had 17 dual match singles wins with seven conference wins. The Home Hill, Australia native's year featured a career-long nine-match winning streak and saw him win five matches over ranked foes.
The sophomore earned the highest ITA ranking of his career at No. 45, following his two wins in the SEC Tournament.
"Adam has been a rock all year and has shown he can be one of the best players in the country which is impressive since he is only a sophomore," McKie said.
Jones was a steady performer all season long for the Vols at the No. 3 spot and put together a career year.
The Perth, Australia native won a career-high 18 singles matches during dual match play and topped it off with eight SEC victories, also a new career best. The junior closed the season on a nine-match win streak, setting a new career long.
"In the last couple months, Scotty has been tough as nails," McKie said. "I know he probably won't make the tournament as an individual but I think he knows he can compete with the best."
Coming off a run to the SEC Championship Final during the SEC Tournament, the Vols are waiting to find out where they place in the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Division I Men's Selection Show is slated to air on Monday, April 29 at 6 p.m. ET on NCAA.com. The first round of the tournament is set to begin on May 3.
