No. 17 Lady Vols Drop Close Match to No. 19 Texas A&M, 4-2

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The fourth-seeded and 17th-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team fought back in singles, but ultimately fell to fifth-seeded and 19th-ranked Texas A&M in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals, 4-2.
The Lady Vols (19-7) lost the doubles point, but grabbed two victories in singles to cut Texas A&M's lead to one. The Aggies (22-6) captured a three-set win on Court 1 to clinch the match.
Ariadna Riley and Kaitlin Staines registered Tennessee's two singles wins at the No. 5 and 2 spots, respectively.
After Tennessee fell behind 2-0, Riley defeated Riley McQuaid, 6-4, 6-3, to cut the Texas A&M lead in half.
Staines brought the Lady Vols to within one again with her three-set singles win over No. 69 Jayci Goldsmith, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. The victory is Staines' third over a ranked opponent in singles this season and the highest-ranked singles player she has defeated this season.
Texas A&M claimed wins at the No. 1, 3 and 6 singles spots.
The Aggies clinched the match in a battle of ranked players on Court 1, No. 54 Katya Townsend defeated No. 56 Sadie Hammond in three sets, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-1.
Tatiana Makarova used a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Tennessee's Johanna Silva on Court 3, 6-1, 7-6 (5), while Tenika McGiffin fell in two sets to Lucia Quiterio, 6-0, 6-4.
Texas A&M won the doubles point behind victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.
Eleventh-ranked Hammond and Staines recorded their sixth ranked win of the season on Court 1, defeating No. 32 Goldsmith and Makarova, 6-3.
On Court 2, Maia Haumuller and McGiffin fell to Townsend and Renee McBryde, 6-3. Court 3 saw Rebeka Mertena and Silva defeated by McQuaid and Quiterio, 6-4.
UP NEXT: Tennessee will learn its NCAA Tournament draw on Monday, April 29, when the official bracket is released.
