Tennessee Defeats Kentucky, 4-0, Clinches Fourth Seed in SEC Tournament
April 14, 2019 | Men's Tennis
LEXINGTON, Ky. – By defeating Kentucky, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Boone Tennis Center, the No. 15 Tennessee men's tennis team clinched the fourth seed in the upcoming SEC Tournament which will be played in Gainesville, Fla., April 17-21.
Tennessee (18-6, 8-4 SEC) jumped out early on the Wildcats, taking the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. The ninth-ranked duo of Timo Stodder/Preston Touliatos won on center court, 6-3, over Cesar Bourgois/Kento Yamada.
Kentucky (15-13, 5-7) evened the doubles score by winning on court two which made the action at number three the decider of the doubles-point.
The Australian duo of Scott Jones/Adam Walton came through for UT, clinching the doubles point by beating Ryo Matsumura/Kevin Huempfner, 7-6 (7-4) on three. Tennessee has won four of its last five doubles points and has claimed doubles by winning on courts one and three, three of those four times.
In singles, Luca Wiedenmann continued UT's momentum by picking up a, 6-4, 6-3, win on four over Bourgois. The junior has been on a roll to close the season, winning seven of his last eight matches.
On center court, No. 29 Stodder picked up his seventh-straight match win by beating Enzo Wallart, 6-2, 6-3.
Jones sealed the match for Tennessee at number three with his defeat of Yamada, 7-5, 6-3, to give the Vols the shutout win. Kentucky has been dominating indoors at home, having only lost three times in the last two years, including Sunday's match. UK's other two losses indoors came against Notre Dame earlier this season and last year against Ohio State.
Tennessee finishes the season on a seven-match winning streak which includes six wins over SEC opponents.
"It was an impressive, 4-0, win here in Lexington," assistant coach James McKie said. "They are a very good team, especially indoors at home. Our guys are really starting to click and as a coach its great to watch and is encouraging to see our rotation step up and perform."
With the win, Tennessee will be the number four seed in the SEC Tournament. UT earns a double bye and will play its first match on Friday, April 19 at 6 p.m. It will face one of three teams, No. 5 Georgia, No. 12 Arkansas or No. 13 Auburn.
Arkansas and Auburn play on Wednesday with the winner facing Georgia on Thursday. Tennessee will square off with the winner of the match on Thursday.
The Vols have played each of the three teams earlier this season, claiming wins over Auburn, 5-2, and over Arkansas, 4-0. UT opened SEC play with Georgia, falling to the Bulldogs 2-4.
"Now our focus shifts to the post season," McKie said. "Everything is ramped up and we have no time for excuses or bad decisions. It's win or go home."
The 2019 SEC Men's Tennis Tournament will be played at Florida's Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
