No. 29 Lady Vols Earn Third SEC Win, Take Down Mississippi State, 4-2
March 22, 2019 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 29th-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team registered another home SEC win Friday afternoon, defeating Mississippi State, 4-2.
The win was the Lady Vols' third straight home conference win, and also snapped a four-match losing streak to the Bulldogs.
"We train so hard every day so that we can come out and compete," Tennessee head coach Alison Ojeda said. "So on match day, that's the day that you have to bring it and let yourself play.
"You're not going to win all of the matches, but you have to let yourself compete. The whole team responded after we got off to a slow start in singles."
Tennessee (13-5, 3-3 SEC) surrendered the doubles point, but responded with wins in four of the five completed singles matches to secure the win.
Kaitlin Staines gave Tennessee its first singles win of the day at the No. 2 singles spot, defeating Magda Adaloglou in two sets, 6-1, 6-1. Staines has won five of her past six singles matches and is now 9-4 in dual matches this season.
At the No. 4 singles spot, Rebeka Mertena gave Tennessee a 2-1 lead with a win over Tamara Racine. The Lady Vol freshman recorded a two-set, 6-0, 6-4 win to improve to 9-1 in her last 10 singles matches.
Junior Ariadna Riley and freshman Maia Haumuller finished the match off for Tennessee with wins on Courts 5 and 6, respectively.
Riley won her second straight singles match from the No. 5 spot, winning a first-set tiebreak to boost herself to a 7-6 (6), 6-1 win over Janina Braun.
Haumuller clinched the match for Tennessee with a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 6 singles spot. The freshman from Corral de Bustos, Argentina, also sports an impressive stretch of recent singles play, as she is 8-1 in her last nine matches.
"In doubles we had a bit of a slow start of every court, but as soon as we stepped out in singles, everyone believed in themselves and we all knew we could do it," Staines said. "I think the team atmosphere helped everyone get over the line today."
Mississippi State (11-7, 2-4) claimed the doubles point with victories on Courts 1 and 2.
On Court 3, Mertena and Johanna Silva registered a 6-1 win over Sara Lizariturry and Janina Braun.
Tennessee's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams fell by equal margins of 6-4. For sixth-ranked duo Sadie Hammond and Staines, the loss was their first at home this season.
UP NEXT: Tennessee is home for one more match this weekend, as the Lady Vols play host to No. 48 Ole Miss Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
