AUSTIN, Texas – The Tennessee Lady Vols open the 2019 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday from the Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
The championships run Wednesday through Saturday and open up Wednesday night with just one event, the 800 yard freestyle relay at 6 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday will begin with preliminaries in the morning followed by the championship finals in the evening. A full schedule is listed below.
Ten Lady Vol swimmers qualified individually for the championships while four others are members of relay teams. Tennessee will compete in all five relay events at NCAAs.
Junior Erika Brown enters the championships coming off a dominating performance at the SEC meet where she took home three individual SEC titles. Brown holds the NCAA record and nation's fastest time in the 50 freestyle at 21.15, she is the top seed in the event over USA Olympian and California-Berkley swimmer Abbey Weitzeil.
The Charlotte, N.C. native is the second seed in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.41 and is number three overall in the 100 butterfly with a swim of 49.85. Brown will swim all three events at the championships.
Meghan Small garnered a top seed in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:51.62. The junior took home the SEC title in the 200 IM four weeks ago in Athens, Ga., beating Canadian Olympic swimmer Sydney Pickrem of Texas A&M.
Small is the 10th seed in the 200 freestyle (1:43.31). She will swim in the 200 backstroke as well and has a seed time of 1:55.27.
Nikol Popov enters the 100 breaststroke as the fourth seed, swimming a time of 58.24 and is ninth in the 200 breaststroke at 2:07.60. Meanwhile, Tess Cieplucha is the seven seed in the 400 IM at 4:03.81.
In the team relays, the Lady Vols' 200 medley relay enters as the number one seed (1:34.26) while the 200 free relay is third (1:26.51), the 400 medley relay is the fourth seed (3:28.43), the 800 freestyle relay comes in as the sixth seed in its event (6:55.15) and the 400 freestyle relay is seeded 11th (3:14.09).
At the SEC Championships last month, Tennessee captured SEC titles in the 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and the 400 medley relay. The Lady Vols finished second in the 800 free relay.
Tennessee's representatives include: Madeline Banic, Bailey Grinter, Sinclair Larson, Stanzi Moseley, Amanda Nunan, Alexis Yager, Carrie Johnson, Megan Sichterman, Tjasa Pintar and Trude Rothrock.
The Lady Vols finished seventh last season and will look to improve upon that this week in Austin. Last year's finish was the first top-10 placement since taking seventh in 2014. The team's best performance at NCAAs was a third place result in 2013 when the Lady Vols won three of five relays.
The championships will be available to watch on ESPN3 and live stats and scoring will be available through texassports.com, divemeets.com and the Meet Mobile app.
