February 08, 2019 | Track & Field
CLEMSON, S.C. -- Tennessee senior captain Maia McCoy took second place at the Tiger Paw Invite with a personal-best 7.24 in the women's 60m final to highlight 14 PRs and six podium finishes for the Big Orange on Friday.
The Memphis native's personal record currently ranks 9th on the 2019 NCAA Indoor Qualifying List and 5th in the SEC this season. Her new PR of 7.24 moves into a tie for No. 6 on Tennessee's all-time top 10 in the women's 60m dash alongside former Lady Vol Kelli White (1999).
With each round of the 60m dash Friday, McCoy progressed with PRs in both qualifying and semifinals. Her opening time of 7.29 was the fastest mark in qualifying, while her mark of 7.28 in the semis was tabbed fourth at the meet.
JUMPIN' JUMPIN': Tennessee women's jumping standouts Alonie Sutton and LaChyna Roe each posted personal records in the long jump Friday afternoon.
Sutton's mark of 6.20m / 20-4.25 was good for second at the meet and ranks sixth in UT history indoors, surpassing recent alum Cidae'a Woods on the program's all-time top 10 list. It was the furthest indoor long jump by a Lady Vol since 2012, when current director of track & field operations Ellen Hurst leapt 6.22m / 20-5 at the SEC Championships.
Roe logged a jump of 5.74m (18-10) Friday, tacking on 2.25 inches to her previous personal best. The duo will be back in action Saturday with the women's triple jump, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
SHOT PUT PODIUMS: UT throwers Joseph Maxwell and Stamatia Scarvelis each posted top-3 finishes in the men's and women's shot put at Clemson, respectively.
Maxwell (Evansville, Ontario, Canada) secured a second-place finish with his lifetime-best heave of 18.96m (62-2.5). His mark ties for fifth on the 2019 SEC Performance List and ranks ninth for UT all-time indoors.
Scarvelis (Santa Barbara, Calif.) made her season debut in the shot put, finishing third at the meet with a toss of 15.96m (52-4.5) - also ranking fifth in the SEC this season.
FIVE PRs GO DOWN IN WASHINGTON: In addition to UT's contingent at Clemson, the Vols sent eight athletes to the Husky Classic in Seattle. Five were able to muster personal records in the Pacific Northwest despite an overhaul on the schedule due to heavy snow in the area.
Tennessee seniors Andre Hillsman (14:24.84) and Wesley Robinson (14:36.22) notched PRs in the men's 5K, followed by a 17-second personal-best from rookie Katie Thronson (9:46.37) in the women's 3K.
Vol sophomore Alex Crigger shaved 0.31 seconds off his NCAA Indoor personal-best in the 3,000m with a mark of 8:23.07, while Lady Vol junior Megan Murray clocked a 16:52.84 in the 5K to round out Tennessee's PRs at Dempsey Indoor.
VAULTERS RISE TO THE OCCASION: Tennessee's pole vaulting duo of Hannah Jefcoat and Kim Spritzky finished second and fourth at the Tiger Paw Invite, respectively. Spritzky towered over a lifetime-best mark of 3.98m (13-0.75) to tie for seventh on UT's all-time top-10 list. Jefcoat surpassed 4.00m for the fourth time this season, clearing 4.13m (13-6.5) on her second attempt to earn silver at the meet.
BREY TABS RUNNER-UP 5K: UT senior Nick Brey earned the highest individual finish of his Tennessee track career indoors, placing second in the 5K at Clemson with a time of 14:54.81.
WHITE'S SEASON-BEST WINS OPEN 400: Layla White clocked her fastest 400m dash of the 2019 indoor campaign, winning Heat 1 of the open section in 54.44. Her time held up as the fastest mark across 10 heats at the Tiger Paw Invite.
