TRACK & FIELD CENTRAL: Tiger Paw Invite/Husky Classic

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee track & field program will gear up for its final weekend of regular-season indoor competition this Friday and Saturday, as the Vols split up for the Tiger Paw Invitational (Clemson, S.C.) and the Husky Classic (Seattle, Wash.). A corps of distance runners will head to the Pacific Northwest, while the rest of the squad competes at Clemson.

The Tiger Paw Invitational will begin at noon Friday with the qualifying round of the women's 60m hurdles and wrap up Saturday at 3 p.m. with the men's 4x400m relay. 42 Tennessee athletes are entered in 24 events at Clemson, going up against a loaded field of competitors from 20 top programs: Auburn, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Houston, Kentucky, Miami, Mississippi State, NC State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Princeton, Purdue, Rutgers, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Tennessee's stint at the Husky Classic will start Friday at 3:30 p.m. PT as rookie Katie Thronson runs the women's 3,000m. The final event for UT will be the men's mile Saturday at 1:10 p.m., featuring Alex Crigger and Zach Long. Other competitors for the Vols at Washington include Andre Hillsman, Minttu Hukka, Megan Murray, Wesley Robinson and Karl Thiessen. One of the premier distance events in the country, the Husky Classic will be broadcast online via FloTrack.

LAST TIME OUT: Tennessee last competed at the Carolina Challenge in Columbia, S.C., tallying five first-place finishes that all went down as facility records at the Carolina Indoor Track & Field Facility. Kiara Rhodes opened the meet with a personal-best 3,762 points to win the pentathlon, while UT vaulters Hannah Jefcoat and Tristan Slater won their respective events with marks of 4.17m (13-8.25) and 5.30m (17-4.5). Senior captains Maia McCoy (60m, 7.30) and LaChyna Roe (triple jump, 13.25m / 43-5.75) rounded out UT's individual champions Saturday afternoon.

VOLS IN THE RANKINGS: In the most recent installment of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I National Track & Field Rating Index (TFRI), Tennessee checked in at No. 30 and No. 16 on the men's and women's sides, respectively. The Vols are one of 18 programs to have both squads ranked inside the top-30.

POSTSEASON SOON: With the SEC and NCAA Championships on the horizon, nine Tennessee athletes and one relay squad find themselves in the top-16 of their respective events among NCAA Division I this season. The top-16 in each event at the end of indoor season will qualify for the NCAA National Championships, scheduled for March 8-9 in Birmingham, Ala.
UP NEXT: Following a two-week break from competition, the Vols will travel to Fayetteville, Ark. for the 2019 SEC Indoor Championships. The University of Arkansas will host the conference meet at the Randal Tyson Track Center on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23.
