Lady Vols Shut Out South Florida, 4-0
February 17, 2019 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee women's tennis team rounded out another weekend of home matches with a win over South Florida Sunday at Goodfriend Tennis Center, 4-0.
Tennessee (6-2) registered quick wins in both singles and doubles over the Bulls (4-5) to record its second win of the weekend.
"I was most impressed with our ability to compete today," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "We competed at an incredibly high level from start to finish.
"That's been our goal this entire week at practice, and it was our goal for our match on Friday as well. South Florida is an incredibly well-coached team and they came out and didn't give up, and that's awesome. They came out and made us compete at a higher level and the girls responded to it."
Sunday's match marks the seventh time in eight matches this season that the Lady Vols have won the doubles point.
Sadie Hammond and Kaitlin Staines, the 17th ranked doubles team in the nation, struck first for Tennessee, taking down Vanja Klaric and Ana Roman, 6-1. Hammond and Staines improve to 13-0 as a team with the win and 7-0 in dual matches this season.
Tenika McGiffin and Maia Haumuller clinched doubles for the Lady Vols with a 6-1 win over Amelie Boy and Evelyne Tiron. McGiffin and Haumuller are now 4-0 playing doubles together this season.
Johanna Silva and Rebeka Mertena did not finish their doubles match on Court 3, but were close to victory as well with a 5-2 lead before play was suspended.
In singles, Haumuller recorded Tennessee's first win with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Nicole Dzenga at the No. 6 singles spot. Silva followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Vanja Klaric at the No. 4 spot, the 17th win in her past 19 singles matches.
Mertena clinched the match for the Lady Vols with a second set tiebreak at the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Mertena trailed 3-5 in the second set before coming back to force the tiebreaker.
"I just tried to fight until the end," Mertena said. "I was down 3-5 and I just tried to get every ball on the court and play my best tennis to be able to come back and win that second set."
Hammond (Court 1) and McGiffin (Court 5) were close to closing out their singles matches before Mertena clinched the match for Tennessee.
Up Next: Tennessee is back at Goodfriend Tennis Center for a trio of matches next weekend. The Lady Vols will take on Purdue on Saturday at 11 a.m. and then play a doubleheader against UT Martin (11 a.m.) and ETSU (3 p.m.) on Sunday.
