Tennessee cards the four low scores in round one as sophomore Mariah Smith holds a two-shot lead
BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The University of Tennessee women's golf team takes a 27-shot lead into the final round of the FAU Winter Warm Up on Monday.
The Lady Vols (-12) were led by the top four scores on the course Sunday including a collegiate-low 67 from sophomore Mariah Smith. She takes a two-shot lead into the final round after having a bogey-free round with five birdies. UT's score of 276 ties a school record for the lowest round in program history. Their margin of victory would rank fourth in program history and the Lady Vols are 11 off the school record of 38 strokes set at the 2006 Dr. Donnis Thompson.
After carding pars on the first five holes, the sophomore poured in five birdies in the next eight holes to take the individual lead. Her round of 67 bests her previous low of 69 in the final round of the Starmount Classic this fall.
Joining Smith near the top of the leaderboard are junior Micheala Williams, senior Ariana Macioce and sophomore Waverly Whiston. Williams (-3) sits two shots back of the lead in second while Macioce (-2) and Whiston (-2) are tied for third on the leaderboard.
Williams recorded her second-lowest score of the season with a 69 on Sunday. The junior was 3-under at the turn including an eagle on the par-5 sixth. It was the only eagle in the field in the first round. She capped off her day with birdies on the 16th and 18th.
Macioce will look for her fourth consecutive top-10 finish on Monday after an opening round of 70. The senior carded all three of her birdies at the turn on No. 8, 9 and 10 while remaining bogey free through the first 16 holes of the round. Whiston joins her at 2-under-par after having four birdies, turning in her second-lowest score of the her sophomore campaign.
Tennessee will be paired with host Florida Atlantic (+15) and Oakland (+20) who sit in second and third, respectively. The first tee time for tomorrow's final round at Osprey Point Golf Club is scheduled for 8:58 a.m. (ET).
Coach's Take
On the feelings of getting back on the course and putting up a low round:
"We have been ready to get back out and compete for a couple weeks. We've been able to get in some good practice and have been playing well at home. It's good to see it pay off in competition. The weather is awesome here so, that's made it even more fun." – Coach Judi Pavon
On finding birdies around the turn of round one:
"The course is set up to be very scoreable and I think it took the players a few holes to get into the groove, that's when the birdies starting coming. Hole No. 8 is probably the hardest hole on the course, and we had two birdies there so, they weren't really expected at that point in the round." – Coach Judi Pavon
On Mariah Smith opening round:
"Mariah has been working really hard and playing well at home. It's great to see it pay off right away with her collegiate low round." – Coach Judi Pavon
