February 16, 2019 | Swimming & Diving
ATHENS, Ga. – The Tennessee swimming and diving team will compete in the 2019 SEC Championships beginning Tuesday at Georgia's Gabrielsen Natatorium.
The Championships will kick off with men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter diving preliminaries starting at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Evening finals begin at 4:20 p.m., which includes diving finals, the 200-yard medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay.
From Wednesday through Saturday preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m. for swimming and 12:30 p.m. for diving, with evening finals concluding at 6 p.m. Swimming preliminaries begin on Wednesday with the 500 free, 200 individual medley and 50 free.
All events, including preliminaries and finals, can be streamed on SEC Network Plus throughout the week. Both Friday and Saturday's evening finals will be broadcast live on the SEC Network beginning at 6 p.m. Swimming and diving preliminaries will also be broadcast on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
Georgia has hosted an SEC meet twice, with the first coming in 1997, where both the Vols and Lady Vols logged top-three finishes and combined for eight SEC champions.
Last year, the Tennessee men finished in fourth place at the SEC Championships at Texas A&M, as the Lady Vols notched a third-place finish and six conference titles.
REGULAR SEASON RECOLLECTIONS
The Tennessee women rounded out the regular season with a 5-3 record and a No. 9 national ranking in the CSCAA TYR Top 25. The Vols men recorded a 5-4 regular season record and finished out the season ranked ninth nationally as well.
The junior duo of Erika Brown and Meghan Small logged yet another pair of stellar regular seasons for the Tennessee women, with a combined 34 individual wins. Brown notched the fourth-best 100 back time (51.88) by a Lady Vol, while Small tallied the sixth-fastest 100 fly (52.05) in program history.
Redshirt senior Zhipeng (Colin) Zeng led the Tennessee men with 10 individual diving wins and team high scores in the 1-meter springboard (428.55), 3-meter (445.35), and platform (492.40) in the regular season.
Sophomore Will Hallam stepped up for the Vols, recording three individual wins in his final four events of the regular season. He also registered the seventh-best score in the platform in Tennessee history at the Georgia diving meet to kick off the new year.
Senior veterans Kyle DeCoursey and Joey Reilman led the Vols swimmers with 10 combined individual wins in the regular season. Reilman notched three of the top-six fastest times in program history in the 100 free, 100 back and 200 back. Meanwhile, mid-year freshman addition Michael Houlie set the ninth-fastest 100 breast time (53.11) in Tennessee men's history in his second college meet against Florida.
RETURNING SEC CHAMPIONS
Five of the Lady Vols seven 2018 SEC champions will be returning this year: Brown, senior Madeline Banic, junior Stanzi Moseley, and sophomores Bailey Grinter and Tjasa Pintar. Senior diver Rachel Rubadue is also a former 2016 conference champion in platform and placed in each of the three diving events last year in College Station.
Brown became the fourth swimmer in program history (men or women) to win a trio of individual SEC titles last season in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly. She upped her SEC gold medal count to six by the end of the meet, with three additional relay wins in the 200 free relay, 200 medley relay and the 400 medley relay.
Consequently, Brown was named the 2018 SEC Swimmer of the Meet and shared the Commissioners Trophy for the highest point total. The Tennessee men were fueled by Reilman, who finished off the podium in fourth place twice, once in the 200 back and in the 400 free relay as a team.
Overall, the Vols swimming and diving team shattered eight school records in its last conference meet, as the Tennessee men and women rounded out the SEC Championships with a fourth and third-place finish.
