December 17, 2019 | Soccer
REYKJAVÍK, Iceland -- Former Tennessee soccer standout MA Vignola has signed a contract with Thróttur FC, a professional sports club based in Reykjavík, Iceland. The Vols' leading scorer in 2019, Vignola becomes the third Vol to join the professional ranks over the last eight months.
Thróttur FC, known locally as Knattspyrnufélagið Þróttur, is coming off a championship season in Iceland's second division with a 15-3 record in 2019. The 2020 campaign will mark the first time that the club has competed in the country's top division since 2015.
Vignola led the Vols in every major attacking category her senior year and was recognized with first team All-SEC and third team All-Region postseason honors. Starting all 18 matches for the Vols in 2019, she tallied career-highs with nine goals, 23 points and three game-winners while also leading the team with five assists.
The Cincinnati, Ohio, native was also a key contributor on Tennessee's 2018 squad that reached the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. Starting 21 matches at left back, Vignola was part of a defensive unit that set school records for the most shutouts (12) and fewest goals allowed (15) in a single season. She also found her way on the scoresheet throughout the campaign, recording three goals and a team-high six assists.
Vignola finished her collegiate career with 76 appearances for the Big Orange over the past four years, totaling 17 goals, 13 assists and 47 points.
When Thróttur FC opens its 2020 campaign on Jan. 12, Vignola will become one of five active pros from the Tennessee soccer program - joining VFLs Bunny Shaw (forward, Bordeaux), Shae Yanez (goalkeeper, Washington Spirit), Carlyn Baldwin (midfielder, Sporting CP) and Hannah Wilkinson (forward, Sporting CP).
