November 03, 2019 | Volleyball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee volleyball team battled back to force a fourth set, but ultimately fell to Georgia in four (24-26, 23-25, 25-20, 21-25).
Â
Tessa Grubbs led the way for the Lady Vols (10-12, 4-8 SEC) offensively with 25 kills, hitting .373 for the match. It marks her third straight match of 20 or more kills and seventh this season.
Â
Lily Felts and Danielle Mahaffey also reached double digits in kills with 13 and 11, respectively. Felts has recorded double-digit kills in three straight matches and six of the past eight.
Â
Sedona Hansen logged her second consecutive match of 40 or more assists with 46, good for her sixth such match this season.
Â
Holding a slim 20-19 lead in the third set after narrowly falling in the first two sets, Tennessee closed the frame on a 5-1 run to force a fourth set, propelled by a pair of kills from both Grubbs and Mahaffey.
Â
The Lady Vols once again fought back after a quick start to the final set by Georgia (17-5, 9-2), rattling off 10-3 run that erased a seven-point deficit and tied the set at 18 apiece. The teams exchanged points before the Bulldogs pulled away to take the set and the match.
Â
From Coach Rackham:
On what she saw that she liked from the team:
"I think we had chances in both the first and second sets to win so I liked a lot of what we were doing, we just weren't able to finish when we needed to. There was just a play here or there that we needed to capitalize on."
Â
On Tennessee battling winning the third set and battling back in the fourth set:
"Being down 0-2 and being able to come back and win that third set, I liked that and liked our team's resiliency there, but frustrated about the way we started the fourth set after winning the third. I thought we came out a little bit flat when we needed to have a little bit more focus and energy after winning set three."
Â
On the message to the team heading into the final stretch of the season:
"We have to play another good team next week, so we have to bounce back. We have kind of a long week because we don't play until Sunday, but we have to go on the road so we're going to have to be able to clean up a couple of things that we saw from this weekend and get ready to play again."
Â
