BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Freshman jumper Alonie Sutton edged the all-time Tennessee women's indoor triple jump record by one centimeter to highlight UT's performances Saturday afternoon at the Gladstein Fieldhouse, as the Vols and Lady Vols competed against Indiana in the annual Tennessee-Indiana Duals.
Sutton's mark of 13.00m (42' 8") broke a 23-year old record in the event, set by Vickie Hudson at the NCAA Championships on March 11, 1995 with a distance of 12.99m (42' 7.5"). Sutton, a Smiths Station, Ala. native, also shattered the program's all-time freshman record of 12.71m (41' 8.5") - owned by former Lady Vol Celriece Law.
Indiana swept the head-to-head dual meets by scores of 72-50 (men) and 67-55 (women).
FIVE MEET RECORDS FALL: From the first gun, Tennessee's men's and women's squad combined to break five Tennessee-Indiana Dual records in a rivalry meet that dates to 1978.
In the first event of the day, sophomore Alexis Duncan posted a time of 8.30 in the 60-meter hurdles, setting a meet record and currently standing as the No. 2 mark among NCAA Division I women this season. Senior captain Maia McCoy followed with a meet-best 7.37 in the 60-meter dash, which ranks third in the country.
All-American thrower Stamatia Scarvelis took the nation's lead in the women's weight throw with a heave of 22.08m (72' 5.25"), breaking a meet record in the process. On the men's side, junior Joseph Maxwell hurled a shot put 18.75m (61' 6.25") for the furthest mark in the history of the Tennessee-Indiana Duals.
Sutton's previously mentioned program-record triple jump (13.00m, 42' 8") was also a meet record.
11 WINS FOR THE BIG ORANGE: Tennessee earned 10 individual victories and one relay win in the season opener at Indiana. A full breakdown of UT's gold-medal performances can be found below:
TRIPLE JUMP PROWESS: The Lady Vol duo of Sutton (13.00m, 42' 8") and LaChyna Roe (12.98m, 42' 7") went 1-2 in the women's triple jump Saturday afternoon. Their marks rank second and third, respectively, on the 2019 NCAA Indoor National Championship Qualifying List.
On the men's side, sophomore Jalen Tate took silver with a 15.62m (51' 3") performance that ranks No. 5 in the country in 2019.
