Scarvelis Tosses Weight Throw Record at UAB Blazer Invite

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Redshirt senior thrower Stamatia Scarvelis topped her own Tennessee program record in the weight throw to highlight UT's performances Friday at the UAB Blazer Invite. The Santa Barbara, Calif. native logged a personal-best heave of 22.54m (73-11.5) to take silver at the meet.
"Overall a good showing at the meet," said UT director of track & field Beth Alford-Sullivan. "Several wins, a meet record and an outstanding school record for Stamatia. We brought a small group to get some work done and it went great. Now back to work in preparation for Virginia Tech next week."

FIVE PODIUMS: The Vols totaled five podium finishes on the day, including three event victories for the Big Orange inside the Birmingham CrossPlex.

- Junior thrower Joseph Maxwell got the day started with his second-straight shot put win, finishing first with a mark of 18.22m (59-9.5).

- Pole vault specialist Hannah Jefcoat picked up a win with a personal-best 4.05m (13-3.5) clearance on her first attempt. The mark broke her previous college indoor PR of 3.80m (12-5.5) that had been recorded three separate times in her career.

- In the men's DMR, Tennessee's group of Alex Crigger, Darryl Harris, Jose Parrilla and Zach Long claimed first with a meet-record time of 10:06.20.

- In addition to Scarvelis' runner-up finish, pole vaulter Tristan Slater cleared 5.10m (16-8.75) to finish second at the meet.

#PRWATCH: Four Vols broke their respective NCAA Indoor personal records Friday afternoon.
WHITENER CHUCKS WEIGHT: Senior captain Seth Whitener logged a season-best mark in the men's weight throw Friday, hurling 20.56m for the furthest toss by any UT athlete this season. As of Friday night, that mark currently ranks No. 8 across NCAA Division I during the 2018-19 season.

DMR RECORD FALLS: Crigger (1200m, 3:06), Harris (400m, 0:49), Parrilla (800m, 1:58) and Long (1600m, 4:08) combined for a mark of 10:06.20 in the men's distance medley relay, breaking the UAB Blazer Invite meet record by more than four seconds. Their time currently stands as the fastest in the NCAA this season.

UP NEXT: The Tennessee track & field program is set to compete in its first two-day meet of the 2019 indoor campaign next week, traveling to Blacksburg, Va. for the Hokie Invitational. The meet is scheduled for Friday and Saurday, Jan. 18-19 at the Rector Field House.
