Â
LAST TIME OUT: UT last competed on Saturday, Jan. 11 at the UAB Blazer Invite, hosted by the Birmingham CrossPlex which will serve as the host site for the 2019 NCAA Indoor National Championships. The Vols totaled five podium finishes, highlighted by a program record from redshirt senior Stamatia Scarvelis in the weight throw (22.54m / 73-11.5). Joseph Maxwell (shot put) and Hannah Jefcoat (pole vault) notched individual wins at UAB, while the men's DMR squad of Alex Crigger, Darryl Harris, Jose Parrilla and Zach Long took first with a meet-record time of 10:06.20.
Â
SCARVELIS TABBED WITH SEC WEEKLY HONORS: For the first time in her career, Stamatia Scarvelis was named the SEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week for her performances at UAB. Her program-record toss of 22.54m (73-11.5) tops the 2019 NCAA Indoor Qualifying list and bests all SEC women by at least four feet this season.
Â
JEFCOAT VAULTS TO NO. 4: With an indoor personal-best clearance of 4.05m (13-3.5), sophomore pole vaulter Hannah Jefcoat moved up to No. 4 on Tennessee's all-time top 10 list. The mark improved upon her previous PR of 3.80m, which had been set three separate times in her career.
MAXWELL ON A TEAR: Junior shot put specialist Joseph Maxwell has opened the indoor season with back-to-back 1st-place finishes at the Tennessee-Indiana Duals and UAB Blazer Invite. At Indiana, his heave of 18.75m (61-6.25) set a new PR and meet record in addition to sealing the first win of his college career. Maxwell followed that performance with a throw of 18.22m (59-9.5) to claim gold at UAB.
Â
UP NEXT: Following a two-week break from competition, Tennessee will be back in action Feb. 1-2 at the Carolina Challenge, hosted by SEC rival South Carolina.
