Junior Jake Meenhorst carded a collegiate-low round, tied for individual lead at 9-under
ROCKY FACE, Ga. – After shooting 12-under-par in the second round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate, the University of Tennessee men's golf team is tied for the lead with Georgia Tech.
The Vols had a quick start to their Saturday round as they were seven-under-par thru the first three holes with four players starting birdie-birdie.
The turn presented some challenges as Tennessee was back to 2-under when it hit the back nine. Another strong charge at the end including two eagles and two birdies on the par-5 15th pushed them back to the top of the leaderboard.
Junior Jake Meenhorst will start the final round tied for the individual lead after having a bogey-free round two. The New Zealand native carded a collegiate-low round 6-under (66) including three birdies in the first four holes.
Fellow junior Brayden Garrison is also in contention for the individual crown sitting just two strokes back of Meenhorst at 7-under-par. Garrison closed out his round of 68 (-4) with three birdies in the final four holes to help push Tennessee to 20-under for the tournament.
Tennessee will be in the final group to tee off of No. 1 tomorrow morning with the first tee set for 9:40 a.m. (ET). The Vols are paired with Georgia Tech and Alabama who are the only teams entering the final round with a score under par.
Coach's Take
On playing stroke-for-stroke with the nation's top teams:
"I would hope that it gives them a sense that they belong with these teams. My message to them this year is that they are better than anyone has given them credit for and capable of competing with anyone. These last two days prove that." – Coach Brennan Webb
On resolve to recover from a tough turn:
"We got off to a great start and then struggled thru the middle of the round. To see the guys bounce back from those struggles and finish the round off so well is a great statement in the belief they have in themselves. Great teams don't panic when they hit a rough patch and we didn't do that today."Â -- Coach Brennan Webb
Player's Take
On his birdie-birdie start to the round:
"I was nervous standing on the first tee but, those two birdies helped settle me into my round. They gave me confidence, getting off to a fast start. I knew I could be patient the rest of the way." –Jake Meenhorst
