September 04, 2018 | Volleyball
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee volleyball team fell for the first time this season losing in five sets to East Tennessee State in Johnson City.
The Lady Vols were led by a career night from junior outside hitter Tessa Grubbs who tallied 25 kills in the five set loss. Her previous career-high was 23 which she last accomplished against LSU in the final match of the 2017 season.
After a tight first set, Tennessee rattled off the last four points to take it 25-20. The Buccaneers would take the second frame to tie up the match. A sub of sophomore Madison Coulter in at the six rotation in the beginning of the third as well as seven kills from Grubbs changed the complexion of the match.
Coulter, who started the opening match at libero, tallied five kills in the third set including two back-to-back that gave the Lady Vols the lead for good at 15-14.
The Buccaneers took the fourth set to force a decisive fifth frame. Tennessee opened up on a 7-0 run before ETSU came back to win the match.
Standout Stat:
The Lady Vols road trip continues this weekend when they travel to California to take on No. 16 University of San Diego for a pair of matches. The Toreros have made 21 appearances in the NCAA Tournament reaching the tournament the last nine seasons.
