MADISON, Wisc. — The Tennessee cross country team returns to action Friday with the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
The women will run a full lineup in the "B" 6K race at noon Eastern (11 a.m. Central) with some Vols racing in the men's "B" 8K race at 12:40 p.m. Eastern (11:40 a.m. Central). Tennessee is fielding a full men's team in the championship field at 2 p.m. Eastern (1 p.m. Central).
The meet presents an opportunity for the Vols to race against some of the nation's best squads and experience the NCAA championship course in advance. Wisconsin will host the NCAA championships on Nov. 17.
RANKING THE FIELD: There are 19 teams in the USTFCCCA national top 30 running the men's 8K, including No. 1 Northern Arizon and No. 3 Portland. Fifteen women's teams from the national top 30 are racing, which includes three squads from the top five: No. 1 New Mexico, No. 2 Colorado and No. 5 Boise State.
LAST MEET: The Vols last competed at the Auburn Invitational on Sept. 7. Senior Zach Long recorded his first career victory in the men's 6K in 17:43.99 to earn SEC Runner of the Week honors. Going against four other teams from the SEC, the men finished second behind Ole Miss. The Lady Vols won the women's 4K with freshmen Katie Thronson and Sydney Seymour leading the way with third- and fourth-place finishes respectively. Thronson took home SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
IN THE REGIONAL RANKINGS: This week, the Tennessee men remained at fifth in the USTFCCCA South Region rankings. The women moved down a spot to sixth.

"This weekend, we head out to the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. This competition is named after Ed Nuttycombe, who was a hugely successful coach for the Wisconsin Badgers and a good friend of mine. It is exciting to catch up with Coach Nuttycombe and to be able to race in his honor.
"Wisconsin has a storied tradition of great distance and cross country teams. We're thrilled to be going back to the heartland of the U.S. on a phenomenal course. Obviously, this is a preview for the national championship course. Our teams will see incredible competition from everyone around the country. The beauty of cross country is that as an invitational -- it's all teams, all at once. We're excited to see our guys and gals line up against some of the nation's best as well as to get the nose in it and fight for some great results. We'll be running full lineups for the men and women. The weather will be quite the change for us. It's looking like 52 degrees and rain. We'll get a true test and hopefully come back with some great results for the Vols."
