August 09, 2018 | Soccer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Tennessee soccer standouts Katie Cousins and Khadija Shaw have each been named to the 2018 Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch list, announced Thursday afternoon by United Soccer Coaches.
The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. This year's winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 4, 2019 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
Last season, Cousins became the sixth player in Tennessee soccer history to reach All-America status, earning a Third Team selection from the United Soccer Coaches. The midfielder from Forest, Va. also collected First Team All-SEC and First Team All-Region honors during her redshirt-sophomore campaign.
Cousins played and started in all 21 games for UT in 2017, helping lead the Vols to a 15-4-2 overall record and their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2012. She tallied two goals and four assists and logged 1,663 minutes last year, the third-most on the team.
Shaw, also known as 'Bunny,' led the Vols with 14 goals and 33 points in 2017. The Tennessee striker garnered First Team All-SEC and First Team All-Region awards last year in her debut season on Rocky Top.
A native of Spanish Town, Jamaica, Shaw produced seven game-winning goals last season to set a new Tennessee record. Her 14 goals ranked second in the SEC and tied for 12th across all of NCAA Division I.
Cousins and Shaw are the first Tennessee duo to be named to the same MAC Hermann Preseason Watch List since 2008 (Jaimel Johnson, Kylee Rossi). UT alumna Hannah Wilkinson was the last Vol to be featured on the list in 2016.
Tennessee's home schedule begins Friday, Aug. 10 as the Vols host a preseason exhibition against SEC Rival Alabama. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. at Regal Soccer Stadium.
