September 09, 2018 | Baseball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – VFL Christin Stewart was called up to the major leagues by the Detroit Tigers today and is likely to make his big-league debut in the coming days.
The former Tennessee slugger has continued to impress with his power since being drafted by Detroit in the first round of the 2015 MLB Draft. Stewart has spent the 2018 season playing for the Tigers' AAA affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens, and is tied for the International League lead with 23 home runs. The Atlanta native also ranks third in the league with 77 RBI and helped lead the Mud Hens to their first playoff appearance since 2007 this year.
Over his four-year minor league career, Stewart has blasted 93 home runs and has 297 RBI to his credit while posting a .503 slugging percentage in 460 games played.
Stewart was a two-time first-team All-SEC selection during his three-year career at UT. He was also named to the 2015 Golden Spikes Midseason Watchlist and earned "Best Hitter" honors on the 2014 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team after hitting .383 with 12 doubles and 16 RBI.
Stewart's best season on Rocky Top came as a junior in 2015 when he batted .311 and led the team with 15 homers and 47 RBI. His 15 long balls that season are tied for eighth in Tennessee single-season history.
Following his breakout junior campaign, Stewart became the Vols' 16th first-round draft pick in program history when he was selected with the 34th overall pick by the Detroit Tigers in the 2015 MLB Draft.
Stewart is set to be the seventh Tennessee player to make his major-league debut since 2010, joining Drew Steckenrider (2017), Zack Godley (2015), Matt Duffy (2015), Yan Gomes (2012), Deunte Heath (2012) and J.P Arencibia (2010).
