No. 13 Vols earn 1-1 draw at Wake Forest
August 23, 2018 | Soccer
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 13 Tennessee battled to a 1-1 draw on the road against Wake Forest Thursday night at Spry Stadium. All-American midfielder Katie Cousins tallied UT's only goal on a free kick to help the Vols (2-0-1) remain unbeaten on the season.
"Really proud of our team," said head coach Brian Pensky. "Going down a goal in the first half on the road against a good team – it all starts with our leadership. They were confident in the locker room at halftime, believing that we could win and therefore saying all the right things."
Trailing 1-0 in the 60th minute, Cousins stepped up for a free kick following a hard foul 20 yards from the goal. The redshirt-junior from Forest, Va. fired a shot around the Wake Forest wall of defenders inside the left post to equalize the match. It was her first goal of the season and fourth of her collegiate career.
Wake Forest (0-1-1) struck first with a goal from midfielder Bayley Feist in the 33rd minute. Deacon forward Hannah Betfort dribbled into the heart of the UT defense, passing to Feist who fired a shot from 18 yards inside the near post beyond the outstretched arms of Vol goalkeeper Shae Yanez. It was the first goal allowed by Yanez this season.
"We knew Wake was going to be a good soccer team with experienced players, so no surprises there," Pensky said. "Just like a long season, one game can have many ebbs and flows. Tonight was no different. After absorbing some pressure in the final 15 minutes of the first half and conceding a goal, we came out flying in the second half and equalized. That's the sign of a tough team. A resilient team. And it certainly bodes well going forward."
Yanez bounced back with four saves across the second half and overtime to preserve the tie. For the contest, Wake Forest outshot Tennessee 14-12. Corner kicks were 9-3 in favor of the Lady Vols.
Seniors Anna Bialczak and Danielle Marcano paced Tennessee with three shots apiece. Junior defender MA Vignola had two shots on goal and played all 110 minutes on the UT back line.
The Vols were limited to three shot attempts in the opening 45 minutes, compared to four for the Demon Deacons. Cousins registered UT's only shot on frame in the first half.
UP NEXT: Tennessee returns home Sunday, Aug. 26 with another non-conference matchup against the Xavier Musketeers. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Regal Soccer Stadium.
