July 03, 2018 | Women's Golf
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- Tennessee Women's Golf had four Lady Vols, Anna Newell, Mariah Smith, Waverly Whiston and Micheala Williams, named to the 2017-18 Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar Team, as released by the organization on Tuesday.
To be selected as an All-American Scholar, student-athletes had to maintain an overall grade point average of 3.50 or higher (on a 4.00 scale) for the entirety of their collegiate career, be of high moral character and in good standing at the college making the nomination. The student-athlete must have also played in at least half of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year nominated.
Newell, Smith, Whiston and Williams were announced as three of the 1,011 women's collegiate golfers recognized with the prestigious honor.
With the announcement, Newell became the fourth Volunteer to be named a four-time WGCA Academic All-American, joining Lucia Polo (2014-17), Marci Turner (2005-08) and Sara Monberg (2010-13). She led the Big Orange with four sub-70 rounds in 2017-18 and shot seven rounds of par or better total. In 2016, she became one of four Volunteers to receive both First Team All-America honors and be named an All-American Scholar. The Tampa, Fla., native was the first Lady Vol to receive the accolades in the same year.
A freshman, Smith competed in seven tournaments for the Lady Vols in 2017-18 and concluded the season with a 76.62 average. She recorded her best collegiate finish, a tie for third place, at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate. The Clarksville, Tennessee, native recently won the Tennessee Women's Amateur Championship.
Fellow freshman Whiston recorded the second-best average on the team, shooting 74.67 through 11 tournaments. A native of San Diego, California, Whiston tied for the team lead with nine rounds of par or better and led the Orange and White with two top-10 finishes.
Williams finished her sophomore season on Rocky Top with a team-leading 74.27 stroke average and a 27th-place finish at the NCAA Championship as an individual. She recorded four top-25 finishes and tied a team-best nine rounds of par or better through 12 tournaments. As a freshman in 2016-17, Williams was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and the First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll.
