Fulmer Announces Contract Extension for Rowing Coach Lisa Glenn
July 18, 2018 | Rowing
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee Director of Athletics Phillip Fulmer announced Wednesday that rowing head coach Lisa Glenn has signed a contract extension through June of 2021.
Glenn has served as head coach of the UT rowing program for 20 years.
"Lisa has represented the university well and has provided steady leadership for Tennessee rowing for two decades now," Fulmer said. "She's really built that program. We've consistently finished near the top of the conference standings in recent years, and rowers are regularly recognized for outstanding academic achievement."
The 2017-18 campaign was highlighted by performances in the Club 4+ and Women's Championship 4+ events at the Head of the Charles, where Tennessee crews finished third and fifth, respectively. Additionally, the 1V8+ was named Big 12 Boat of the Week on April 19 after taking first place in the Varsity Eight Final C at the Clemson Invitational.Â
Tennessee is coming off a third-place finish in the 2018 Big 12 Championship, narrowly missing a second-place showing in the automatic qualifier standings by only one point. It was the program's ninth consecutive top-three conference finish (the Vols competed as a member of Conference USA from 2010-14).
"I'm appreciative of the support our administration provides for me and the Tennessee rowing program," Glenn said. "We have numerous opportunities and resources here at Tennessee, and we aim to use them to their fullest as students, athletes and people.
"The team is poised for big steps in the years ahead, and I'm excited to work with our committed staff of rowing coaches, student-athletes and support staff as we press forward to reach new heights. Our future accomplishments are built upon the efforts of the great people who make up our Big Orange rowing family."
Under Glenn's leadership, Tennessee rowing has produced six All-Americans and has earned eight NCAA Championship appearances, including full-team selections in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010. Tennessee claimed Conference USA Championships in 2010 and 2012. In both of those seasons, Glenn was named C-USA Coach of the Year.
Glenn's student-athletes have also excelled in the classroom. Overall, Tennessee has earned 66 CRCA National Scholar-Athlete awards since 2001. Tennessee rowers have also collected two Academic All-America citation and seven Academic All-District awards during the Glenn era.Â
A member of the rowing team has received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for each of the last four years (Sarah McAuliffe in 2015, Harper Lucas in 2016, Chandler Frumin in 2017 and Jennifer Davis in 2018), and in 2018 senior Katie Porter was named a Torchbearer.
Prior to taking over UT's program in 1998, Glenn was the assistant rowing coach at University of Iowa for four years. In 1993, she served as the assistant development coach for the U.S. Junior National Team and was tabbed the squad's head coach the following year.
NOTE: The Southeastern Conference does not sponsor a rowing championship, so Tennessee's rowing program competes in the Big 12 Conference. Big 12 rowing programs include Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia, along with affiliate members Alabama, Old Dominion and Tennessee.
