OOLTEWAH, Tenn. -- Tennessee's Mariah Smith claimed her first championship of the summer with a 1-up match-play win over Middle Tennessee State's Jenna Burris in the 86th annual Tennessee Women's Amateur. The tournament was held at the Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee, and had a field of over 60 players.
The event featured a 36-hole stroke play qualifier after which the Championship Division was cut to the low 32 players who then advanced to match play.
"It feels so great to get a big win like this under my belt, especially against such a tough, competitive field," Smith said. "I've been working especially hard lately and it's great to see that my hard work is starting to pay off and really show in my game."
Smith shot rounds of 75 and 72 for a 36-hole total of 147 to claim the No. 3-seed heading into match play.
The Clarksville, Tennessee, native won her first match four and two. She then faced fellow Lady Vol and teammate Malia Stovall in the Round of 16. Smith came out on top with a winning score of three and two.
In the quarterfinals, Smith competed against UNC Charlotte's Siarra Stout. Smith took the match 1-up to advance to the semifinals where she won five and four versus Memphis' Sydney Colwill.
The finals match against Burris came down to No. 18. After sitting all-square through four holes, Smith took a 1-up lead on No. 5 and carded a birdie on Hole 8. She made the turn at 1-up and led the match for 10 holes before Burris squared it up on No. 15. Burris then took the lead on Hole 16. Smith fought back, shooting par on 17 to square the match up. She parred 18 after Burris bogeyed to win 1-up and become the 2018 Tennessee Women's Amateur Champion.
"I'm really happy with the golfer I'm becoming," Smith added.
