May 08, 2018 | Women's Golf
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Tennessee women's golf finished the second round of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional with a score of 296 (+8) on Tuesday. The Lady Vols have shot 581 (+5) through two rounds on the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course and sit tied for 10th place with one round left to play.
Sophomore Micheala Williams led the Volunteers for the second day in a row and enters the final round tied for fourth place.
"Micheala had a great round for us today again which was good," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We didn't get the scores we needed from the other girls. We made a few errors off the tee and were in the trees a little bit more than we needed to be, but Micheala hung in there and kept us in it."
Williams posted her second sub-70 round of the tournament on Tuesday, shooting a 3-under 69. Apart from one bogey, Williams played a clean round and tallied four birdies.
"I was hitting a lot of fairways and hitting it solid," Williams said. " I've hit 14 or 15 greens each day. I just missed a few putts towards the end."
The Athens, Alabama, native boasts the third-best par four average of the tournament and leads Tennessee with 10 birdies.
"She's really confident and I think she came into this thinking you had to shoot low and has really taken advantage of the easier holes," Pavon said.
Junior Ariana Macioce carded the next best score for the Vols on Tuesday, turning in a 2-over 74. Macioce sits tied for 57th place with a 36-hole score of 150 (+6).
Blakesly Warren, a senior from Chattanooga, notched 76 (+4) and is tied for 48th place (149, +5) entering the final round.
After two days of competition, senior Anna Newell and freshman Waverly Whiston are tied for 60th place with scores of 151 (+7). Newell shot 77 (+5) in the second round while Whiston recorded 80 (+8).
"Tomorrow we really have nothing to lose," Pavon added. "We were a 10-seed coming in and our girls just need to play better, play aggressive, and go for it and try to make something happen out there. With a good day, we could sneak in."
Tennessee is paired with Vanderbilt and Missouri in the final round and will start teeing off at 8:00 a.m. ET from Hole 10.
In the team standings, No. 2 Alabama moved into first place after shooting 12-under in the second round for a 36-hole score of 558 (-18) while No. 15 Washington sits four strokes behind in second (562, -14). No. 7-ranked Furman and Florida State are tied for third (563, -13).
Individually, Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho leads the field after shooting a 8-under 64 on Tuesday for a total score of 134 (-10).
Tomorrow's final round will decide which six teams and three individuals not on those teams advance to the NCAA National Championship, May 18-23, 2018, hosted by Oklahoma State at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
