Williams Leads Lady Vols in RD 1 of Tallahassee Regional

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Tennessee women's golf shot a three-under 285 in the first round of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional to finish Monday tied for fourth place.
"Today was a good start for us," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We were pretty steady on the back nine, which is where we started. At the turn, we lost several shots but bounced back with some birdies at the end and counted three birdies on the last hole which was good."
The Lady Vols were led by sophomore Micheala Williams in the round.
"Micheala played great today. She has been due for a good round to break par. The course is really set up for some good scores and she took advantage of that," Pavon said.
Williams posted Tennessee's best round of the spring, a five-under 67, en route to tying for third place. The Athens, Alabama, native leads the field in par-3 scoring (-2) and is tied for fourth overall with six birdies.
"Today was pretty good," Williams said. "I hit solid. I hit 13 of the 14 fairways and I was making 20-footers. It was a lot better and I got to two of the par fives in two shots."
Also shooting below par, freshman Waverly Whiston carded a 1-under 71 in her first NCAA Regional round. Whiston enters day two tied for 16th place.
Seniors Blakesly Warren and Anna Newell shot 73 (+1) and 74 (+2), respectively, to round out scoring for the Lady Vols. Warren will begin Tuesday tied for 33rd place while Newell will start tied for 42nd.
Junior Ariana Macioce finished the round tied for 61st place with a 4-over 76.
"We were pretty motivated today and excited. It's a good course to make birdies on. We need to do the same thing tomorrow. We need to make a lot of birdies and try not to make as many bogeys and it'll be a good two days" Williams added.
Tennessee is paired with Clemson and Wake Forest in the second round and will start teeing off at 9:00 a.m. ET from Hole 1.
In the team standings, No. 15 Washington leads the field after shooting 15-under (273). No. 7-ranked Furman sits in second with a score of 280 (-8) and Alabama, the No. 2 team in the country, is in third (282, -6). Individually, Washington's Wenyung Keh leads the field after shooting a 9-under 63.
