May 04, 2018 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee track and field team hosts the Tennessee Challenge on Saturday for one final tuneup before the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships return to Rocky Top next week.
Admission is free for the Tennessee Challenge at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium.
Field events start at 9 a.m. Eastern with the hammer throw. Running events begin at noon.
SCHOOLS PARTICIPATING: Tennessee, Alabama-Huntsville, Belmont, Carson-Newman, Clayton State, Jacksonville State, Lee (Tenn.), Limestone, Montreat, Mount Olive, North Greenville, Piedmont, Queens (N.C.), Tennessee Tech, Tennessee Wesleyan, Tusculum, Vanderbilt.
HOME-HOME-HOME: This weekend marks the second of three events hosted at Tom Black Track this spring. The 51st Tennessee Relays were held in April, and the SEC Championships will be held May 11-13. It is the first time Tennessee is hosting the conference meet since 2010.
LAST WEEK: Tennessee broke four school records to conclude the National Relay Championships at Arkansas' John McDonnell Field. Senior Shania Collins led off the record-setting meet Friday by matching the program mark in the 100-meter dash (11.10 seconds), and the Vols picked up the pace on the second day in field events.
Two program records came within seconds of each other with Jordan West in the shot put ring and junior LaChyna Roe on the triple jump runway. West, a freshman from Rahway, New Jersey, unleashed a throw of 19.70 meters (64-7.75) to break Chuck Locke's 1982 record of 19.53m (64-1). He finished second in the competition and moved into eighth nationally. Roe followed moments later with a triple jump mark of 13.09m (42-11.5) on her second attempt. The junior from Richmond, Virginia, improved her record on her final jump, setting the bar at 13.14m (43-1.5). Vickie Hudson previously held the Tennessee record with a distance of 13.06m (42-10.25) in 1995.
Georgios Korakidis broke his own freshman record in the hammer throw, recording a mark of 67.09m (220-1). The distance ranked fourth all-time in UT history.
Senior Nathan Strother recorded a career-best 45.01 seconds in the 400 meters, which leads the SEC. He also ran his fastest 200 meters (20.76).
