May 25, 2018 | Men's Tennis
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Timo Stodder continued his run at the NCAA Championship on Friday with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jose Salazar of Arkansas to advance to the quarterfinal round at Wake Forest Tennis Center.Â
For the third consecutive match, Stodder was able to win in straight sets, with Friday's performance being perhaps his best of the tournament thus far. After being defeated by Salazar on March 16, Stodder broke the Razorbacks' top singles player six times to capitalize in the Round of 16.Â
Stodder will face another SEC foe in the quarterfinals, as Florida's Alfredo Perez and Mississippi State's Nuno Borges conclude their match on Friday afternoon. He has faced both players this season, picking up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Perez on March 4 before falling to Borges 7-6 (1), 5-7, 6-4 on April 1. Start times for Saturday's quarterfinal matches will be announced later on Friday.Â
With the victory, Stodder improves to 32-13 on the season. He becomes the 10th player in Tennessee program history to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship singles bracket, and the first since both Tennys Sandgren and Rhyne Williams did so in 2011.
