STILLWATER, Okla. – Tennessee's Micheala Williams carded 74 on Monday to finish the NCAA Championship in Stillwater, Oklahoma, tied for 27th place with a 72-hole score of 293 (+5).
"Micheala had a really good week at the NCAA Championship," head coach Judi Pavon said. "She played well from start to finish. I think she realized that she can be one of the top players in the country and she is already looking forward to next season. I know she loves this experience and wants to be back again her next two seasons. It was great to have Tennessee represented a t the Championship after not being there last season. The NCAA and Oklahoma State ran a great tournament."
Starting on No. 1, Williams parred her first six holes before bogeying No. 7. She then parred Hole 8 before closing out the front nine with a birdie to make the turn at even par.
"I'm happy to have had this opportunity to compete at Nationals and I'm happy with how I played, but not satisfied with my play on the back nine," Williams said.
After two straight pars to start the back, the Athens, Alabama, native birdied her third hole of the side thanks to a great iron shot. She carded two more pars, but bogeyed Nos. 13 and 14 and shot double on Hole 17 after hitting errant drives.
Williams rounded out the Championship with a birdie on 18 to finish the day 2-over-par. On the hole, she layed up to 55 yards and hit a wedge close for a tap-in putt.
"It felt really good to end it with a birdie. My goal for next year is to be at Nationals with the team," Williams added. "I'm glad I had a chance to represent the Lady Vols, but this would have been an even better experience with my teammates and I believe we can be here next year."
Williams' 27th-place finish is the third-best by a Lady Vol who qualified for the NCAA Championship as an individual. Young-A Yang placed fifth with a score of 288 in the 2001 tournament and Abby Pearson tied for 21st place in the 1993 NCAA Championship after shooting 301 over four rounds.
With 72 holes of stroke play complete, the top eight teams advance to the match play portion of the tournament which begins on Tuesday, May 22. The rounds will be broadcast on Golf Channel.
