STILLWATER, Okla. – Tennessee's Micheala Williams carded 75 in the second round of the NCAA Championship in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Saturday to enter the third round of stroke play tied for 24th place with a 36-hole score of 147.
"Micheala played well again today," head coach Judi Pavon said. "She didn't hit it as well the first nine, but she did a good job fighting."
Starting on the back nine, Williams began the round for UT with a par and then birdied Hole 11 before recording her second par of the round on No. 12.
The Athens, Alabama, native struggled over her next four holes, bogeying both Nos. 13 and 14. She birdied Hole 15 to gain a stroke back, but proceeded to bogey No. 16. Williams rounded out the back nine with two pars to take a score of 1-over into the turn.
"I missed a few drives on the back nine but had a few tap-in birdies on the front nine," Williams said.
The sophomore bogeyed her first hole of the front nine but tallied three straight pars and a birdie on Hole 5 to remain even on the side. Williams then got into trouble on the par-4 sixth hole and shot bogey. She fought back and birdied Hole 8, hitting a mid-iron to a tap-in putt.
Williams finished the round on Hole 9, a reachable par 5. After a good drive, she hit a poor second shot that resulted in a lost ball and eventual double-bogey.
"That was a disappointing finish, but she is still in great shape to make the cut tomorrow," Pavon said.
The field will be cut to the top 15 teams and the top nine individuals not on those teams after Sunday's third round. The advancing players will compete in a fourth round of stroke play on Monday, May 21, to determine the individual medalist.
Williams will tee off Sunday's third round from Hole 10 at 9:25 a.m. ET. She is paired with Houston's Leonie Harm and Oklahoma State's Emma Broze.
"I'm feeling pretty good heading into tomorrow and I want to hit more fairways than today." Williams added.
In the team standings, No. 3 UCLA shot a nine-under 279 to jump into first place with an overall score of 573 (-3). No. 6 Southern California shot 10-over in the round and dropped to third place after leading the field on day one. No. 1 Alabama carded 2-under on Saturday to remain in second (578, +2). Individually, three players are tied for first at 5-under (139).
