Lady Vols Fall to Oregon, 4-2, in First Round of NCAAs
May 11, 2018 | Women's Tennis
DURHAM, N.C. -- Despite a hard-fought match, the Tennessee women's tennis team fell short in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament against Oregon, 4-2, at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
Â
The Lady Vols (18-12) jumped out to an early lead by taking the doubles point. Tenika McGiffin and Chelsea Sawyer teamed up on Court 3 for a 6-4 win against Lilien and Wagner. The duo broke serve to begin the match and never looked back. UT sealed the 1-0 advantage with a victory on Court 2 by Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck, who downed Oregon's Kahfiani and Tobita, 6-3.
Â
Today's match marked the 20th time this season that Tennessee won the doubles point. Hammond and Schuck, who clinched doubles six times this season, are riding a five-match winning streak and won 11 of their last 13 to finish the spring.
Â
After the Ducks tied things up at 1-1, Johanna Silva picked up her 20th win of the season in singles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory on Court 6 over Paiton Wagner to push the Lady Vols back ahead.
Â
However, Oregon would go on to win three of the remaining four courts to clinch the match and advance to the second round of the tournament. This concludes the 2017-18 season for the Lady Vols.
