Vols Break Three Records on Day 2 of National Relays
April 28, 2018 | Track & Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Tennessee track and field team broke three more school records Saturday to conclude the National Relay Championships at Arkansas' John McDonnell Field.
Senior Shania Collins led off the record-setting meet Friday by matching the program mark in the 100-meter dash (11.10 seconds), and the Vols picked up the pace on the second day in field events.Â
Two program records came within seconds of each other with Jordan West in the shot put ring and junior LaChyna Roe on the triple jump runway.Â
West, a freshman from Rahway, New Jersey, unleashed a throw of 19.70 meters (64-7.75) to break Chuck Locke's 1982 record of 19.53m (64-1). He finished second in the competition and moved into eighth nationally.Â
Roe followed moments later with a triple jump mark of 13.09m (42-11.5) on her second attempt. The junior from Richmond, Virginia, improved her record on her final jump, setting the bar at 13.14m (43-1.5). Vickie Hudson previously held the Tennessee record with a distance of 13.06m (42-10.25) in 1995.
Georgios Korakidis broke his own freshman record in the hammer throw, recording a mark of 67.09m (220-1). The distance ranked fourth all-time in UT history.Â
Relays closed out the meet with the Vols improving seed times for the SEC championships in two weeks.Â
The women's 4x100m relay team of Alexis Duncan, Shania Collins, Felecia Majors and Maia McCoy took third in a season-best time of 43.59 seconds. Later in the session, the 4x400m team of Lenysse Dyer, Majors, Collins and McCoy cut nearly two seconds off their season best in 3:32.63.Â
For the men, the 4x100m team of Kwantreyl McConico, Mustaqeem Williams, Darryl Harris and Nathan Strother lowered their season time to 39.63 seconds to take fifth.Â
UP NEXT: The Vols will be home for the next two weeks at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium. The Tennessee Challenge is next week (May 5), followed by the SEC Championships (May 11-13). Â

"I'm very pleased with this weekend. First of all, Arkansas gets major kudos for putting this meet together and running it in a first-class manner. There was great competition, great venue, great weather, great coaches here. They did a great job. Hats off for them for putting together this experience for all these teams across the country.Â
"The Tennessee Vols had a great one. We set three school records. I can't speak highly enough of those performances yesterday and today all the way around. We competed well and steped up to the line to the challenges. We weren't perfect though. Some of those things are still in the works, so I'm excited we can get back home for the next two weeks: a final tuneup for the SEC meet and, of course, the SEC Championships. I'm thrilled. I think the Vols are coming together at the right time, and hopefully Vol Nation will find its way out to Tom Black Track to see us live."
