Jennifer Davis Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
April 20, 2018 | Rowing
Davis is set to graduate with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology and a minor in leadership studies in May. Davis is a four-year member of the rowing team and was a member of the Big 12 Academic All-Conference team in 2015 and 2016. She was also named a CRCA Scholar-Athlete in 2016.
Davis coxed the 1V8+ to a third-place finish in the 2017 Big 12 Conference Championship. She also guided the Vols to an 11th place finish in the Club 8+ at the 2017 Head of the Charles Regatta.
While Davis' ultimate career path is set on medical school, she plans on taking a year off to pursue a fellowship or internship working with a non-profit using sports as a platform to advance leadership skills in students. Davis has a passion for sport leadership, something she learned about herself through UT's VOLeaders Academy.
"I think the VOLeaders Academy was the collegiate experience that opened the next door for me," said Davis. "Going to Vietnam I was able to recognize all of the possibilities for my career, just within kinesiology, and I better understand how I can use my knowledge to give back both locally and globally. I think after that trip I knew I didn't want to settle for something that was just kind of subpar with my degree. I want to keep pushing myself outside my comfort zone and use my skills and knowledge to make a difference."
Davis has also been engaged in the classroom, boasting a 3.91 GPA and having served as an undergraduate teaching assistant in the biology lab and as a research assistant with pediatric exercise physiology in 2016. She is currently completing a policy internship in the department of leadership studies.
This marks the fourth consecutive year that a member of the rowing team has received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship; Sarah McAuliffe earned the award in 2015, Harper Lucas received it in 2016 and Chandler Frumin was a recipient in 2017.
"The fact that Jenn Davis is UT's fourth consecutive rower to get one is evidence not only that she is a truly exceptional student-athlete, but also that she has been surrounded by great support from her coaches, administrators, faculty, and academic support staff," said Dr. Don Bruce, UT Faculty Athletics Representative. "Jenn is an amazing young woman who really wants to make a difference in the world. We need more students like her to commit to pursuing careers in or around intercollegiate athletics."
