Lady Vols Win Spring Tournament Championship
April 15, 2018 | Volleyball
Tennessee wrapped up yet another productive weekend in spring tournament play, claiming three wins and winning five of six sets of their way to being crowned tournament champions.
Â
The Lady Vols swept two sets against Kennesaw State (25-21, 25-23) and Chattanooga (25-19, 25-19), while also splitting two sets with West Florida (25-27, 25-19).
Â
"It was great to get another opportunity for competition and to see where we have improved as well as what areas need more attention," Tennessee head coach Eve Rackham said. "I thought the team responded well in some tight situations, which hopefully will pay off in the future.Â
Â
"We are a constant work in progress but I was happy to see how hard the girls played. They are still learning, adapting and figuring out a variety of new things. Overall, I think we took another step forward."
Â
Over the course of the weekend, Tennessee tallied 83 kills to its opponents' 61. Junior Tessa Grubbs led the team with 21, followed by senior Erica Treiber with 18. Junior Alyssa Andreno added 12, while redshirt junior Breana Jeter had 11.
Â
In digs, the Lady Vols recorded 88 over the weekend compared to a combined total of 78 from their opponents. For Tennessee, junior Asha Phillips logged a team-leading 18, with Brooke Schumacher and Madison Coulter each contributing 14. Sophomore Callie Williams (12) and junior Sedona Hansen (10) also cracked double digits.
Â
Tennessee also led the way in blocks, outscoring its opponents 14-9. Andreno and Treiber led the team with four each, Jeter and senior Stephanie Spencer had two each, while freshman Emma Schriner and sophomore Olivia Schwamberger each notched one.
