KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee track and field team opened the 51st Tennessee Relays with a first- and second-place finish in the men's hammer throw and a strong start in the women's heptathlon Thursday at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium.
The three-day meet kicked off with action in the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon as well as competition in the hammer throw.
In the men's hammer throw, freshman Georgios Korakidis took first place with a best mark of 63.64m (208-9) on his final attempt, while junior Seth Whitener came in second with a throw of 63.23m (207-5).
On the women's side, junior Maya Neal sits in second place in the heptathlon through one day of competition.
Neal set three new personal bests in the heptathlon, eclipsing former high marks in the high jump (1st; 1.67m) and shot put (2nd; 12.13m). Neal's 200m time was also a career-best (25.13), but was wind-aided at 3.6 meters per second.
Freshman Kiara Rhodes finished day one of the relays just three spots behind Neal in the heptathlon in fifth place. Rhodes's best finish came in the 100m hurdles, as she tallied a fifth-place finish with a time of 14.28.
In the women's hammer throw, junior Stamatia Scarvelis placed third with a throw of 60.71m.
Friday will feature the conclusion of the men's decathlon (beginning at 10 a.m.) and women's heptathlon (beginning at 11 a.m.), while running events will start at 2:45 p.m. Friday's full schedule of events is posted below.
The 4x100m relay team of Christian Coleman, Justin Gatlin, Ronnie Baker and Mike Rodgers will also hold a press conference on Friday. America's Team sponsored by Pro Form Sports will speak to the media at 12:45 p.m.

"It's been a thrill to get this meet started with the facility finally coming together. Getting ready to host out here has been so much fun. Today's a long day. We had the multis this morning through midday and had a great competition out of Maya Neal and Kiara Rhodes. Maya is just nine points back of the lead, so really pleased with how they're looking. They competed great. Through the hammer throws, it was impressive to see Georgios come back on his last throw for the win over teammate Seth Whitener. I'm thrilled with what's to come the next two days."
