Strother Advances to 400m Finals at NCAAs

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Tennessee's Nathan Strother is heading back to the 400-meter finals after his preliminary performance Friday to open the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
Strother finished third in his heat, but it was good for fourth overall to qualify for the final. His clocked his fastest second lap of the season and crossed the line in 45.71 seconds to reach the finals.
Tennessee had three other Vols in action Friday. Junior Mustaqeem Williams was 11th in the men's 200-meter preliminaries. On the women's side, junior Stamatia Scarvelis was 13th in the shot put with a mark of 15.55 meters (51-0.25), and senior Shania Collins was 14th in the 200m (23.28).
The two-day championships conclude Saturday. Strother will contend for the 400m title, and Scarvelis will contest the weight throw. Both of Tennessee's 4x400m relay teams are also in action.
Field events begin at 3 p.m. Eastern (2 p.m. Central), and races start at 5:10 p.m. Eastern (4:10 p.m. Central).

A senior from Norcross, Georgia, Strother was runner-up in the 400 meters as a sophomore in 2016.
