March 31, 2018 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The 38th-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team completed its doubleheader sweep on Saturday, shutting out Western Kentucky, 4-0, in the second match of the day at Barksdale Stadium.
Â
The Lady Vols (16-7, 2-7 SEC) began the day with a 4-2 victory over Alabama to mark their second consecutive win over an SEC opponent.
Â
Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck came out strong in doubles, winning four straight games to defeat the duo of Elpida Malamou and Violetta Shatalova, 6-2, on Court 2. Elizabeth Profit and Chelsea Sawyer clinched the doubles point for the Big Orange with a 6-4 match on Court 3 against Cindy Oest and Natalia De Ugarte.
Â
In singles, Johanna Silva capped off her perfect 3-0 weekend by breezing past De Ugarte, 6-0, 6-3, on Court 5. Sawyer quickly followed that up with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Oest on Court 6. Profit clinched the match and the Lady Vols' seventh shut out of the season with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Malamou on Court 2.
"I was just really happy to clinch it for the team," Profit said. "Everyone has been working really hard, and it's really exciting to see everything pay off for us this weekend."
Â
"The Vols are back," said Staines. "It's great to see our team jump to another level the last couple of days. The support today was phenomenal and has made such a huge difference for our environment. I couldn't be more proud of the girls, and this is just the beginning for us."
Tennessee is away from home next weekend for its final road trip of the spring to face Mississippi State (April 5) and Ole Miss (April 7). For the most up-to-date information about the Tennessee women's tennis program, follow @Vol_WTennis on Twitter.
