March 25, 2018 | Track & Field
LOS ANGELES — Tennessee recorded 15 top-three finishes and one victory Saturday to conclude the first Power 5 Trailblazer Challenge at Southern California's Loker Track Stadium.Â
The Vols placed fourth in the men's team scoring with 100 points, while Ohio State won with 152. The UT women were fifth with 70 points; host Southern California took the team victory with 148 points. Â
Tennessee had an individual place in the top three in all 10 field events the team participated in Saturday, headlined by a long jump victory by senior Cidae'a Woods.Â
The Power 5 Trailblazer Challenge highlighted the five combined track and field programs in Power 5 conferences led by women: Tennessee (Beth Alford-Sullivan), Southern California (Caryl Smith Gilbert), Miami (Amy Deem), Ole Miss (Connie Price-Smith) and Ohio State (Karen Dennis).Â
WOODS WINS: Senior Cidae'a Woods collected her first victory of the outdoor season in the long jump, leaping 6.17 meters (20-3). It was just .01 meters off her career best.Â
She also placed third in the high jump, clearing 1.68m (5-6).Â
ANOTHER FRESHMAN RECORD SET: Jordan West, who was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team during the indoor season, picked up where he left off in the ring. He broke the Tennessee freshman record in the shot put with a mark of 18.80 meters (61-8.25), good for second place.
Three Tennessee throwing records fell during opening weekend. Georgios Korakidis set the freshman record in the hammer throw (66.15m; 217-0), and Stamatia Scarvelis broke her own program record in the hammer throw (68.37m; 224-3). Â
UP NEXT: Tennessee will split squads next weekend, with half the team traveling to the Pepsi Florida Relays (March 30-31) in Gainesville, Florida, and the other travelers headed to the Stanford Invitational (March 31-April 1) in Stanford, California.Â
