March 16, 2018 | Swimming & Diving
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Tennessee sophomore Erika Brown earned her second silver medal of the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Coming off a silver-medal performance in the 50-yard freestyle, Brown did the same in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.34. It was her third-fastest time of the season.
With one day left in the meet, the Lady Vols are seventh in the team standings with 137.5 points. Stanford leads with 414 points.
Junior Madeline Banic also scored in the 100 butterfly, taking fifth in the consolation final and 13th overall in 51.81.
Senior Katie Armitage closed out her competitive career with the Lady Vols with an 11th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke. She took third in the consolation final in 59.39, the best time in her two seasons at UT. It was the second-fastest time in program history.
Sophomore Tess Cieplucha also picked up team points in the 400 IM, taking 14th in 4:07.13.
Junior Rachel Rubadue, coming off a seventh-place finish on 1-meter springboard, was in the top eight through three rounds but missed a pair of dives to finish 26th with 302.60 points.
UP NEXT: Tennessee has a full squad competing tomorrow with 9 of 10 individuals in events. The preliminary session starts at 10 a.m. with the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle relay and platform diving. Tennessee Head Coach Matt Kredich:
"Some of the highlights of the day was Tess getting her first-ever final at the NCAA championships. she competed with a lot of poise in the morning and the evening. Maddy Banic swam her best time of the season at a critical time for us.
"Erika Brown continued to be fantastic in the 100 butterfly. Finishing as a national runner up is extraordinary. The fact that she's disappointed about it is what makes her a champion.
"Katie Armitage finished her career with her best-time ever and a scoring swim at NCAs. We definitely felt like we left some points out there tonight. The relay was a really strange occurrence and really tested our team. None of us had prepared for us. It was a difficult day emotionally for us, and we all feel for each other deeply. When someone makes mistakes or has frustrating performances, we all feel that. I'm impressed with the way we came out tonight, and I feel good about the resolve heading into tomorrow.
Tennessee Diving Coach Dave Parrington:
"It was a tale of 2 competitions for Rachel on 3-meter. She was in really good shape through her first three rounds. On a dive she usually hits, she had a bad hurdle on her reverse two and a half. She had a decent dive at the end, but it wasn't enough to get her in scoring. She was doing a lot of positive stuff heading into platform tomorrow."
