Lady Vols Finish Seventh at NCAA Meet
March 17, 2018 | Swimming & Diving
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Tennessee Lady Volunteers finished seventh in the team standings Saturday to conclude the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Behind four finalists and a record-setting relay on the final day, the Lady Vols finished with a total of 180.5 points to secure their first top-10 finish since 2014.
Stanford won the meet with 593 points, well ahead of the pack. California was second with 373 points.
Sophomore Erika Brown capped a standout meet by setting her second individual school record of the meet, taking sixth in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.08 seconds.
A year ago, Brown did not even qualify individually for the NCAA championships. This year, she was top eight in all three of her individual events.
She took second in both the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly in addition to her sixth-place finish in the 100 freestyle. She also broke the school record in the 200 freestyle (1:42.39) during the opening relay.
Tennessee also concluded the meet with a school record. Brown teamed up with Meghan Small, Bailey Grinter and Stanzi Moseley to finish sixth in the 400 freestyle relay in a UT record time of 3:11.89, dropping more than half a second faster than the morning trials.
Senior and team captain Micah Bohon reached her first NCAA individual final in her last event of her swimming career, and it took a career best to do it. She swam a 1:52.14 to qualify for the evening session and took 15th overall (1:52.79).
Bohon and fellow senior Katie Armitage both ended their collegiate careers making an individual final for the first time. Armitage was 11th in the 100 breaststroke Friday.
In additional scoring, sophomore Stanzi Moseley made her second final with a 13th-place finish in the 100 freestyle (47.90). Sophomore Meghan Small was 16th in the 200 butterfly (1:54.80).
In platform diving, junior Rachel Rubadue missed her third dive and played catchup after that. She rallied for 21st place (239.80), just five spots and 12 points out of the final.
UP NEXT: The NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships will begin Wednesday at the University of Minnesota.

Tennessee Head Coach Matt Kredich:
"I thought we brought first-day energy to the last day. I was really really proud of how our women came back from a very emotional day yesterday and really fought into some spots in finals. Micah Bohon's first-ever individual points couldn't have come at a better time for us. Her performance in the 200 backstroke was a firestarter for us. She's been our captain and our leader all season, and that just inspired everyone. Meghan Small, who's carried a huge load this meet, fought a way to get 16th in the 200 fly. Our women, included Micah, put together a great last relay to get a spot in finals.
Tonight, Erika Brown continued to thrill me and the rest of the team with her competitiveness. She finds a way to keep getting faster. That's a new school record. For our women to set another school record in the very last swim of the meet, we have a lot to celebrate.
I also think the move from finishing 22nd last year to seventh required a whole lot of work and imagination and commitment. I have to commend everybody on our team for that. Not just the people who are here, but our whole team made a commitment to make some big changes from last year, and it's cool to see it reflected in the score of NCAAs."
Tennessee Diving Coach Dave Parrington:
"It's definitely kind of a downer to end on a note we did on platform. We wanted to put some points on the board for the team because it certainly is her best event. That's how it goes in these competitions sometimes, especially on platform. I'm extremely proud of her making the A final earlier in the week. It was up and down both yesterday and today, but look at the positives and turn the page and move on to the next thing."
