March 11, 2018 | Track & Field
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Tennessee's Nathan Strother and Stamatia Scarvelis earned first-team All-America honors Saturday to end the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.Â
Strother, the only Vol to advance through race preliminaries Friday, turned in a sixth-place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 45.67.Â
With the top-eight result, he collected first-team All-America honors in the indoor 400m for the second time in his career. He was the runner-up in the event in 2016 as a sophomore.
Scarvelis earned first-team All-America honors of her own, finishing fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 22.17 meters (72-9).Â
It was her second All-America honor of the weekend, having also picked up second-team honors with her 13th-place finish in the shot put (15.55m; 51-0.25) on Friday.Â
Strother returned to the track at the end of the meet to help the Vols rally for a 12th-place finish in the 4x400m relay. He split a 44.60 on the anchor leg, the fourth-fastest 400m split in the event.Â
The meet ends the indoor season for Tennessee. The outdoor season opens March 23-24 with the Power 5 Trailblazer Challenge in Los Angeles.
QUOTES
Beth Alford-Sullivan, Director of Track and Field/Cross Country
"I'm proud of Nathan Strother and Stamatia to come back as NCAA All-Americans in one of the most competitive NCAA championships. I think there were five collegiate records set and a world record set at this championship. Nate Strother's race was probably the best eight 400 performances ever run in one competition.Â
"Overall, we came away short. We walk away disappointed, but we're looking forward to starting fresh in the outdoor season and making a comeback off this experience."Â
