Lady Vols Shut Out Opponents in Doubleheader
February 09, 2018 | Women's Tennis
AKRON, Ohio -- The Tennessee women's tennis team extended its winning streak to eight matches with a pair of shutouts over Akron and Cleveland State on Friday.
The Lady Vols (8-0) began the day with a 4-0 win over CSU. The Vikings were limited to only five active players in the match, meaning UT only had to win one court in doubles and two in singles.
Ariadna Riley and Kaitlin Staines clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 victory over the duo of Schoenberg and Lenoan. Staines then earned a quick 6-1, 6-2 win in singles versus Blanche Lenoan. Fellow freshman Tenika McGiffin soon followed suit with a 6-1, 6-2 match herself, beating Anastasia Perin to seal the match for Tennessee.
In the second match of the day, the Lady Vols claimed the doubles point for the seventh time this season to take the early advantage. McGiffin and Elizabeth Profit defeated Akron's Echeverry and Wituski, 6-2, before Riley and Staines clinched doubles with a 6-1 match against Pedroso and Uljanov.
Riley wasted no time getting Tennessee on the board in singles, claiming Court 1 with a 6-0, 6-0 win versus Rita Pedroso. Chelsea Sawyer capitalized on her first action of the day by beating Waverly Wituski, 6-3, 6-1. Staines capped off her day with a second win in singles, downing Luisa Echeverry, 6-2, 6-3, and clinching the match for the Lady Vols, 4-0.
Tennessee returns to the courts on Sunday for a match against Indiana at the IU Tennis Center at 11 a.m. ET to wrap up the weekend.
