KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee swimming and diving team returns home to host Auburn's full squad and the defending NCAA champions Texas men Friday at Allan Jones Aquatic Center.
The meet begins at noon and admission is free.
HONORING THE LEGENDS: This weekend, Tennessee is recognizing the 40th anniversary of the 1978 NCAA men's swimming and diving championship team. Members of the team will be in attendance during Friday's meet as will swimming and diving alumni throughout program history. The remarkable 1978 team was led by 50- and 100-yard freestyle champion Andy Coan, who passed away in 2017. Ray Bussard, who coached the Vols from 1968-88, led the team to the national title as well seven consecutive SEC championships from 1972 to 1978.
LAST WEEK: The Tennessee swimming and diving teams stormed past Purdue and Wisconsin in their first road meet of the season last week at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. The Tennessee men (3-1), ranked 15th nationally, won the first five events of the meet and never looked back, winning 12 of 16 competitions en route to defeating No. 24 Wisconsin 204-96 and No. 25 Purdue 200-98. The 24th-ranked Lady Vols (3-1) won 10 of 16 events behind a three-win performance by junior Erika Brown. Tennessee upended No. 14 Wisconsin 206.5-92.5 and host Purdue 188-111.
SEC HONORS(X2): Senior Zhipeng (Colin) Zeng and junior Erika Brown earned SEC swimming and diving honors for back-to-back weeks for continuing their unbeaten starts to the season. Zeng improved his record to 6-for-6 in springboard competitions. He won the 3-meter competition with a season-best score of 439.75 and the 1-meter contest with a score of 393.60. Brown put together three individual race wins to pace the Lady Vols against Purdue and Wisconsin, posting season bests in all three events. She took first in the 100-yard butterfly (52.72 - fifth nationally); 100 backstroke (53.02 - seventh nationally) and the 100 freestyle (49.43 - 15th nationally). She was also part of the winning 200 medley relay team.
TEXAS NATIVE (1): Junior Taylor Abbott is the only Tennessee swimmer based out of Texas. The distance freestyler grew up in Cedar Park, Texas, and is coming off a two-win meet against Purdue and Wisconsin (500 free, 1000 free).
UP NEXT: The divers will head to Texas next week for the Texas Diving Invitational (Nov. 14-16). It will be good preparation for the divers as the Longhorns will host both NCAA championships in March. The Vols then host the championship-style Tennessee Invitational (Nov. 29 to Dec. 1) to wrap up the fall semester of competition.
