Vols Announce 2019 Baseball Schedule
November 04, 2018 | Baseball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Head coach Tony Vitello and the Tennessee baseball team released its 2019 schedule on Sunday morning.
Vitello, who is entering his second season at the helm of the program, will lead the Volunteers through a challenging slate of games that includes 30 contests against teams that advanced to the postseason in 2018. Of those 30 games, 19 will come against opponents who made it to the NCAA Super Regionals and nine will be against teams that qualified for the 2018 College World Series.
Tennessee is scheduled to play 56 regular-season games in 2019, with 36 of those set to take place in Knoxville at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Check out the month by month breakdown of the 2019 schedule below.
February
The Vols will open the season with nine consecutive home contests, beginning with a three-game series versus Appalachian State (Feb. 15-17). After its first midweek game of the year against Northern Kentucky (Feb. 19), UT will welcome Big 10 foe Indiana to Rocky Top for three games from Feb. 22-24. The Hoosiers finished with a 40-19 record and were the runner-up in the NCAA Austin Regional last season.
The Big Orange close out the month of February with two midweek games against Liberty (Feb. 26) and Middle Tennessee (Feb. 27).
March
Tennessee begins the month of March at the Cox Diamond Invitational in Pensacola, Fla., where it will take on Louisiana Monroe (March 1), North Florida (March 2) and Western Kentucky (March 3). The team will stay on the road to take on 2018 NCAA Tournament participant Troy in Hoover, Ala., on March 5 before returning home to host Fresno State from March 8-10.
A pair of home midweek games versus UNC Asheville on March 12 and March 13 will serve as the final tune-ups for Southeastern Conference play, which kicks off with a trip to Auburn (March 15-17). The Tigers were one victory away from advancing to the CWS last year.
Sandwiched between two midweek contests against in-state foe ETSU on March 19 and March 26 is the Vols' SEC home opening series against South Carolina (March 22-24), who was also one win away from making the trip to Omaha last season.
UT will travel to face in-state and conference rival Vanderbilt to close out the month. The Commodores were yet another SEC team that was eliminated in the Super Regionals in 2018, losing to Mississippi State in three games.
April
The Vols will have another nine-game homestand to start the month of April, starting with a midweek game against Belmont on April 2 before playing the first of three 2018 CWS teams on their schedule. UT welcomes Mississippi State to Lindsey Nelson Stadium for three games from April 5-7.
After another midweek against an in-state opponent in Lipscomb (April 9), the Orange and White will play four straight games against NCAA tournament teams. Georgia visits Knoxville from April 12-14 before 2018 Ohio Valley Conference champion Morehead State comes to town on April 16 to conclude the homestand.
Tennessee will play six of its final seven games of the month on the road. The Vols will make the short trip north to Lexington to take on Kentucky in its brand-new ballpark from April 19-21 before hosting Gardner-Webb for a midweek game on April 23. The Big Orange wrap up the month of April with a road series against last year's national runner-up, Arkansas (April 26-28).
May
UT will have four home games to open the final month of the regular season, hosting Missouri from May 3-5 before an in-state contest against Austin Peay on May 7.
The Vols will head down to Gainesville for their final road trip of the regular season to take on Florida (May 10-12). The Gators are coming off a season where they won their 15th SEC regular-season title and advanced to their fourth consecutive CWS.
Tennessee will conclude the regular season with four home contests, starting with a midweek battle against last season's Cinderella team Tennessee Tech. The Golden Eagles posted the second-best record in college baseball last year, going 53-12 and coming up one win shy of making it to the CWS.
The regular season comes to a close with a series at home against Ole Miss from May 16-18.
The SEC Tournament will run from May 21-26, with the top 12 teams in the regular-season standings advancing to Hoover, Ala. Should the Vols advance to postseason play, the NCAA tournament is slated to begin on the weekend after the SEC Tournament concludes.
