November 24, 2018 | Volleyball
Senior Erica Treiber career night helps Tennessee capture its 14th home victory of the season
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee volleyball team defeated the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday afternoon in four sets to close out the regular season in Thompson-Boling Arena.
With the win, the 22nd-ranked Lady Vols captured their 25th win of the season and finished second in the conference standings. Tennessee awaits the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday to learn where it will head in the postseason. The Lady Vols would make their 15th overall NCAA Tournament appearance, with the most recent coming in 2012.
Tennessee (25-5, 16-2 Southeastern Conference) was led on Senior Day by senior Erica Treiber and junior Tessa Grubbs, who both tallied double-digit kills and combined for 36 of Tennessee's 57 kills. In her final match in Thompson-Boling Arena, Treiber enjoyed a career night, finishing with 16 kills and 11 blocks for her first career double-double.
Grubbs set a new career-high hitting percentage at .586 on the afternoon. Treiber hit .481 on the afternoon, which moved her into Tennessee's top spot in career hitting percentage. The Lady Vols are 16-2 when Treiber hits .400 or higher.
Led by Treiber's six kills (1.000 hitting percentage), Tennessee came out swinging in the first set. The Lady Vols hit .303 while holding the Rebels to -.114 during the frame. It marked the lowest hitting percentage by any UT opponent in a set this season.
After Tennessee went up two sets, the Rebels responded in the third, taking the frame 25-21. It would be the only set Ole Miss would claim, however, as Tennessee closed it out in the fourth with the help of six kills from Grubbs.
Defensively, Tennessee limited Emily Stroup of Ole Miss to .039 on the afternoon. She came into the match averaging a league-high 4.77 kills per set, which also ranked 14th nationally.
In total, the Lady Vols recorded a season-high 15 blocks Sunday. Eight of the team's 15 blocks came in the first set, which included five blocks from Treiber. She would go on to set a new career-high with 11 blocks. Junior Alyssa Andreno joined the block party, recording six total blocks on the afternoon.
Tennessee extended its season-long win streak to 11 matches and finished alone in second in the conference standings with a record of 16-2. It is the highest finish for Tennessee since it won the SEC Championship in 2011.
From Coach Adams:
On play of Erica Treiber:
"Treiber did what Treiber always does. It's not a surprise at all. It doesn't shock any of us. She goes out and performs every game we have played this season. She did start out on fire. When we looked at it, it was 13 kills on 15 attempts with no errors through three sets, which is unbelievable, even for her. She goes out and works hard and competes every day."
On Tessa Grubbs closing out the match:
"It was a really good match for Tessa. She played well all match. To get the last kill of the match is hopefully good for her confidence going into some big matches next weekend."
From Erica Treiber:
On senior night:
"It's senior night. We just want to do it for each other and go out and play. That kind of determination and mentality goes a long way. I think that is what a lot of tonight was about."
On UT's game plan against Emily Stroup:
"We knew that they like to set her a lot so, we were focused on stopping her. We were really good at our game plan tonight, and we were really prepared for the match. I think that helped out a lot in knowing where the ball was going to go and where to set up a good block."
From Brooke Schumacher:
On coming out and starting the match well:
"Coming into the match, we knew this would be a meaningful one just being senior day. We were all playing for each other. The entire team knew what we had to do to win today. We really saw that in the first two sets."
On the 11-match winning streak:
"We really knew what we needed to do in practice and focus on the next match we had. We always had a single-match mentality. We really have focused on what we needed to do. Our coaches have done a really good job with scouting and letting us know what to do."
Standout Stat:
The Lady Vols will await their selection to the NCAA Tournament. The selection show airs Sunday night.
The selection show airs on ESPNU, with the broadcast scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET.
