KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 22 University of Tennessee captured its first win over No. 13 Florida since 2012, winning in three sets on Wednesday evening.
It marks the first time in the rally-scoring era and the first time since 1988 that they Lady Vols have swept the Gators. With the win, Tennessee improves to 13-1 inside of Thompson-Boling Arena which is the most home wins by any team in the Southeastern Conference this season.
The Lady Vols (24-5, 15-2 SEC) were led by freshman Danielle Mahaffey and sophomore Addisyn Rowe. Mahaffey tied her career-high with 11 kills in the match. Both players finished the match hitting over .400 as Tennessee won its fourth match over a ranked opponent this season.
With the Lady Vols up 2-0 heading into the third set, the Gators (23-6, 14-3 SEC) tied the set at 10-10 with a kill from freshman Marlie Monserez. From there, the Lady Vol block came alive recording five of their seven blocks in the final frame. They sealed the victory with a block from senior Erica Treiber and junior Tessa Grubbs, ending the set at 25-21 in the third.
Tennessee held Florida to a .118 hitting percentage on the night which is the second-lowest hitting percentage for the Gators since the 2009 season. Sophomore Callie Williams was a key part of back row as she and fellow sophomore Madison Coulter led the team with 13 digs each.
Williams posted her first double-double of the season, and just her fifth of her career, recording 18 assists to go with her team-high 13 digs.
They extended their season-long win streak to 10 games and move into sole possession of second place in the conference with the win over the Gators. With one game to play, Tennessee has clinched at least a share of second which would be the highest finish since 2011.
From Coach Adams:
On winning in a sweep:
"Winning 3-0 in front of a great crowd is always an amazing feeling. We have been preaching one match at a time no matter who we were playing. We didn't look at where each team was ranked. We looked at it like any other match we played this year even though it was a big match." -- Coach Adams
On the crowd:
"We got notified before the match the line was so long that they were going to let people in prior to the gate actually opening. Being around the Thanksgiving break, we weren't sure but, the fans were huge and definitely played a part in this one." -- Coach Adams
On play of the team at this point in the season:
"We have been preaching getting better all year. It doesn't happen overnight. It is a long process and we have been striving to improve every practice and every time we go out and play. It's nice to see that the hard work we are putting in inside of the gym every day is putting us in the right direction." --Coach Adams
On Danielle Mahaffey:
"She was fantastic tonight. She's a little unorthadox and I think that helped her out tonight. Going into the match tonight, I thought that was one of Florida's strengths -- defending the right side attack. She played fantastic. She played at a really high level. She executed the things that we have been training and talking to her about in practice. She came out and executed it tonight." -- Coach Adams
From Erica Treiber and Danielle Mahaffey:
On what was working for the team:
"I think a lot was working. We were digging ball like crazy in the back court so, our transition game was really going tonight. I think its great to find kills from every position from the outsides, the right rides and the middles." -- Erica Treiber
On staying in system:
"With the passers passing the way they did, it really created so much room at the net and the players on the other side really don't know who the ball is going to. They served us really tough tonight but, our passers stuck it out tonight. It felt like they were digging every ball." -- Erica Treiber
On the environment in Thompson-Boling:
"It was so crazy. All the fans were excited and the team was excited. It was great to play in." -- Danielle Mahaffey
On offensive rhythm:
"In the practices leading up, we talked about the what offensively would open up for me. The setters also did a great job holding the middles. So, it all worked out perfectly." -- Danielle Mahaffey
Standout Stat:
The Lady Vols will finish the season at home as they will welcome the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday for an afternoon matchup. The Lady Vols will look to capture their eleventh win in a row when they welcome the Rebels. Tennessee will honor its four seniors in Brooke Schumacher, Erica Treiber, Breana Jeter and Stephanie Spencer.
The match will air on SEC Network+ with the first serve scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (ET) in Knoxville, Tenn.
