Marcano Tabbed TDS Player of the Week; Flynn Receives Team of the Week Honors
November 20, 2018 | Soccer
CULVER CITY, Calif. -- Tennessee seniors Danielle Marcano and Meghan Flynn were both recognized by TopDrawerSoccer.com Tuesday morning for their standout performances in the NCAA Tournament this past weekend. Marcano was chosen as the National Player of the Week, while she and Flynn were both featured on the publication's Team of the Week.
Â
Marcano (Buford, Ga.) logged back-to-back braces in Tennessee's second- and third-round victories over Arizona and Texas A&M, vaulting her season total from five to nine goals. She is now UT's all-time career leader in points (14) and goals (7) scored in the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Against the Wildcats, the senior forward connected on a goal 46 seconds into the second half before finding the game-winner off a corner kick in the 90th minute to seal a 3-2 victory for the Big Orange. Marcano tallied the opening score against the Aggies from point-blank range in the third minute, followed by a rocket shot into the top shelf from 12 yards in the 47th minute to give Tennessee a 2-0 cushion over Texas A&M.
Â
Flynn (Arlington, Va.) was credited with four assists on the weekend, helping set up two-thirds of Tennessee's goals against Arizona and Texas A&M. The redshirt-senior midfielder found Salera Jordan on the counter-attack before connecting with Marcano on a throw-in as Tennessee defeated Arizona 3-2 in the round of 32. Flynn also found Marcano and Jordan for goals against the Aggies, serving crosses from the left corner to set up their respective scores in the third and 68th minutes.
Additionally, UT seniors Bunny Shaw (two assists vs. A&M) and Shae Yanez (eight saves, clean sheet vs. A&M) were named honorable mentions for the Nov. 20 edition of TopDrawerSoccer's Team of the Week.
This marks the first time this season that two Tennessee players have been named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week, and the second time a Volunteer has been selected as the National Player of the Week. Shaw received that honor on Oct. 23 following UT victories over LSU and Texas A&M in the regular season.
Â
The Vols will head west to face No. 1 overall seed Stanford in UT's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 23. Kickoff is slated for 5 PM ET at the Laird Q. Cagan Stadium in Stanford, Calif.
